I found me a Taco yesterday. 1995 extra cab 4x4 V6 auto. One of those, "won't start, don't wanna fix it" deals for $2000:clap:. I have to find a way to arrange to have it hauled home today.

The seller told me that he ..."drove the truck about a 100yards and I lost power to my breaks and steering and the engine just shut off...." and the CEL did not come on. On a quick inspection yesterday, the battery has power, the starter clicks like it needs contacts. There doesn't seem to any sign of any major problems. Hopefully, I can have it up and running shortly:steer:.

The ad is already taken down so I don't have pics yet.:meh:

Man, that would be a pretty expense alternator, and I don't know if it would interchange from the v6 to the 22R/e John

The starter has new contacts and plunger but is still just clicking. I tried grounding the block and bypassing the starter relay, same result. Either there is an additional issue with the starter or I have some sort of electrical gremlin. Looks like I'm in for some more tinkering.:hhmm:

Are you testing the starter out of the vehicle?

Runs great out of the rig, doesn't turn with a load, the engine turns over with a relatively short tool on the front crank bolt. Have checked the cables, relay, etc, tests good. One of the contacts and the plunger were almost worn to gone, so thought that was the problem, bench tested fine, but there must be another problem in the starter that isn't allowing currant flow, like bad brushes.

Update:

Cleaned up the terminals and made a new ground wire. It fired right up and ran fairly well:bounce::bounce2:. Shut it off and started again, ran like chit. Third time the engine just spun. Looks like it needs a timing belt.:meh: Good to see it run before tearing into it.:hhmm::hillbilly:

You are aware this whole thread is worthless without pics right? :flipoff2:

I was wondering which smart ass would come up with that one first.
I'm too busy messing with it to take pics, I had hoped to be able to show it in person by now.

Rob, this has been an interesting thread to follow. Good luck and I hope the tbelt is the end of your running issues.

I saw the initial description on the first post and I see it is a 1995 ~ how many miles on it if you dont mind me asking?

But, did you get it moved out of your driveway while it DID run OK? John

Thanks Murf, it has 211k miles, it will be a work in progress for a while. Mechanically it appears to be relatively well maintained. Otherwise, it was owned by a kid, the stereo has been jacked, the windshield cracked and needs a good cleaning and general TLC. It should make a good, cheap second vehicle.:grinpimp:

I was tempted, John. Good thing I resisted. I prolly would have made it to the end of the street and died.:whoops:
