New stereo and factory amp bypass

Disconnect the amp if you haven't already and if your unit is running hot then you have a bad earth/ground. The antenna cable should give you adequate earth but i ran additional black earth cable from the side of the HU to a decent point on the dash for extra earth. One thing i noticed on mine is there were two antenna cables and one provided a better ground (improving the clarity of sound 150% ) have a look and see if you also have two cables and do a test with the HU out of its mounting hole to test for overheating and sound quality improvement when swapping antenna cables

I found out what happened one of my rear speakers was grounded out. Woo hoo. Thank god. I didnt have to remove my dadh again!

My factory stereo was seriously lacking in performance in my 1995 Land Cruiser so I decided to upgrade to a Kenwood DDX371 Touch screen unit. I purchased the Metra 70-8112 Harness to connect the new stereo harness to the factory harness (white connector) behind the stereo. I drove it for about a week in this configuration but the new sound wasn't what I was expecting, so off to Mud to find a solution! I read through many different threads saying to bypass or remove the factory amp in order to let the new stereo power the speakers. I decided that this was the solution to getting it to sound better. The threads stated that I needed to get a different harness other than the Metra 70-8112. This new harness was the Scosche TA02B. In most of the threads it stated that I needed to add 20" of wire to extend it from the back of the new stereo to the amp location near the passenger right knee. I can follow instruction good enough so that's exactly what I did, however once I routed this harness and tried to plug into the male connectors that came off the amp, it was a no go, they didn't fit! Off to Mud again to figure out where I went wrong. I noticed in a lot of the pics that some rigs have 3 connections at the amp where I only had 2. Could this be the difference between the Land Cruiser and the LX? I don't know but it didn't work. I stumbled upon a thread that said to connect this harness to the 2 gray (previously unused) connectors behind the stereo. It worked and sounded much better too! Problem solved! Hope this helps someone else.

I wanted to post this because I found some of the threads very confusing and in my case not accurate for my application. Over all I'm happy with the set up, however the screen does have a glare issue. Another odd thing, my front door speakers do not work in any of the configurations but the little dash ones do...not sure about that.

Another thing I was having problems with is the DVD player, it seems you have to hook up a wire for the Parking Brake switch in order to have it work. I just grounded it to the chassis of the stereo seems to work fine.

Did you ever find out how to fix the 'no sound from front door speakers' issue? I just soldered up a harness from my new stereo to a Metra amp bypass harness, and plugged it into the two gray connections at the truck and I'm getting sound from the front knee speakers and the rear roof speakers, but nothing from the door speakers. Not sure how to deal with this, given that the harness only has 4 speaker connections and I'm weak at electrical.

Been having issues with my speakers not working or popping. Replaced a speaker and that’s not an issue. Went to look for the stock amp and it appears it’s missing possibly? See picture below. Did some years not come with an amp or is it likely it was removed? Stereo head unit it stock, doesn’t look like original owner did any upgrades or mods. Thanks

What year? US spec? How many speakers do you have?

The 9 speaker stereo was standard for all US spec 80 series models, but maybe not non-US (IDK). If you have more than four speakers, there should be an amplifier.

Why does no one think to use the EWD? The stereo doesn't run on gas.

Have this on two threads now, believe you responded to the other. I have 6 speakers, two dash, two second row, and two third row. Believe thats why I dont have a factory amp. US spec. What is EWD?

Electrical Wiring Diagram.

It took me a while to find a copy but it’s been really helpful.

FWIW, I had no idea I had rear speakers until I bothered to look back there and at the diagram. Was so busy tackling other squawks on the truck that it wasn’t even in my list of priorities till I started with the stereo project.

Can you share the EWD? Know where I can find it?

That's the 1994 edition. The 1995 edition is in the Resources Section. Along with the FSM.

Do you have a model without a sunroof and rook rack too?

question: I have the 1997 lexus lx 450 and looking at the diagram in the resources EWD attached to this post, I only see two connectors. one gray and the other white (amp). On the videos I checked, there are a total of 3: 2 gray connectors (bypasses amp) and one white if u want to use factory amp. I see on my car that there is just one gray and one white.
