New stereo and factory amp bypass

Going from my poor memory and reviewing the write up. I didn't use the long harness that someone said to make and attach to the amp. I ended up using the gray hook ups behind the factory stereo and removed the amp. It's been quite a while since I did this so I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

i ended up getting the 1987 toyota and newer 1761 adaptor and it plugged into the grey connections that were not being used on the dash! everything is working fine.

so does using the the grey connectors keep the Sub in the back working... I have an aftermarket amp and sub in the back using stock signal wires and seprate power for the amp.

Just had a similar problem. I installed new front door speakers and now my rear speakers aren't working.

Did you guys figured out the problem? I got the same issue, installed front door speakers and stock rear door speakers won't work now, so decided to put it a new head unit and now all speakers work but about every 2 days I lose all my sound, it comes back about in another 2 days. I have not bypass amp which I'm leaning towards that being the problem.

@Ozpall did you solder and secure all of your connections? Sounds like something is loose. When I put in a new H/U I lost my rear speakers. I suspect it's because I didn't bypass the amp so that's on my to-do list.

Yep, I just did this on my '93 a few weeks ago. I was getting ready to make a bypass harness and I got the multimeter out. Ended up only having to unplug the stock amp and I was good to go. Very strange, but very awesome and saved me a ton of time. Sounds a million times better now, too.

I know this is a bit old now but i am going through this same issue. I'm pretty sure the Scosche connector to the grey bypass connectors are 4 speaker only which is why only the driver, passenger and two rear passenger speakers work only.

I had the same problem anf it was driving me nuts. It was a mystery. When i disconnected the rear speakers the front would work and when I would plug in the harness for the rear speakers the front speakers wont work. I thought it was the headunit and it wasnt. Then it started working like normal and still dont know what it was. I have ocd when it comes to wiring so everything is soldered and double heat shrinked. So have no clue. Please let me know of you figure it out

If I figure it out during my final install I will let you know

My question is, the harness for the original grey connectors (bypass connectors) behind the HU , are they available online I can only find the white connector harness which I am using and of course the sound quality is nothing short of awful , hence the bypass option as discussed to death on mud.

Or Is it the 1987 & 1761 adapters in combination ?

I had yet another look and I think ive worked it out. For the 10 million posts on speakers and stock amp this thread is by far the most helpul. I think I will make a video of this to help others in future and prevent the days of reading through all the posts like many others before me.

Now it happened again!! You jinxed me! Lol radio is working but get no sound wth!

This really sucks! I hate taking out the dash. I have no clue what it can be! Do i need to extend the harness to feed the speaker wires from the radio to where the amp use to be? Now iam plugged into the harness that is behing the head unit.

I had the same problem about a month ago and i returned the head unit thinking it was the head unit

I think it's fair to say this along with the PHH are the Achilles heel for the 80s series
The grey bypass connectors which plug into the scosche TA02B harness are 4 pin only which mean you are sacrificing the boot, knee panel and roof speakers on the LX models to essentially run the 4 main door speakers without the factory amp.
I think what is happening for those whose cut in and out intermittently is because the amp has not been unplugged only bypassed ,remembering the amp still has an additional speaker wire connection to the 4 main door speakers and it's sometimes receiving conflicting signals at the speakers end.
One common mistake with any HU install is not securing a proper ground to the unit as it's assumed the mounting bracket or factory amp is proving adequate earthing. Wrong, there should be a black earth cable near the loom ready to be secured to the side of the HU, this will stop the HU getting too hot and also improve the clarity of sound and distortions especially with the engine running

Disconnect the amp if you haven't already and if your unit is running hot then you have a bad earth/ground. The antenna cable should give you adequate earth but i ran additional black earth cable from the side of the HU to a decent point on the dash for extra earth. One thing i noticed on mine is there were two antenna cables and one provided a better ground (improving the clarity of sound 150% ) have a look and see if you also have two cables and do a test with the HU out of its mounting hole to test for overheating and sound quality improvement when swapping antenna cables
