New starter I guess, or is it fixable?

Is a unreliable starter fixable of should I just drop the 100 bucks on a reman. one? After the engine rebuild, it now just clicks loudly and doesn't turn the engine until a good 9+ cranks. Brought it to trak auto and had it tested. It just pops out but didn't crank(spin) until the 3rd try. Is my only option to replace it or is there some basic (and cheap) fix. I've never messed witha starter before.
The LC has bee such a money pit for the last 6 months! Atleast, I guess there won't be much to replace under the hood soon!

nice! will that thread work on a fj62 as well? Mine has been acting funny and I need to fix it when I get the lift finished.

really really easy repair. total of one bolt, two studs (one electrical, one mounting) then three screws to gain access to contacts.

Keep an eye on spring loaded parts, they like to fly around, but other than that, dead simple.

Other than the time I spent looking for contacts, the job took maybe an hour. And that was working on rocks, not a concrete floor and on our patio table instead of a bench. With a creeper and a workbench, I bet I could do the whole job in 30 minutes.

When I did the Man a fre Hi po engine swap mine started to do the same thing after checking all connections it still kept doing the same thing. I think that the extra compresion and the new engine made it do that. I went and bought a green mean starter with the gear reduction and no Problems now starts right up. Good luck.

I was wonderoing the same thing. The machine shop milled off some of the head so compression would be up. I realize this is probably a cheap fix, but I've got a remanufactured starter thats been used for 2 months offered to me for 25 bucks. Seems good too me....

As for cables, they should probably be replaced eventually too. Do they just breal down over time or something. Hows a thick ass cable go bad anyway?

one way it could degrade over time is through corrosion where the connector attaches to the cable. This increases resistance, which reduces the amps available to the starter.
