Here's a picture of the new style spindle with the roller bearing inside.

Hey, what are the grooves in the bushing for? I noticed them when dissasembling my axle yesterday, it's a nifty pattern, but what is the functionality?

Also, the roller bearing instead of the bushing- is that just to distribute load over a wider area?

The radial grooves in bushings act as "oil pumps" to divert grease into the bushing. As far as the bearing goes I assume it is less resistant to wear than a bushing.

Don't quite understand the purpose of the rollered bushing. The spindle doesn't really touch the birf axle anyhoo,.. right?

Yes, that picture is of the roller bearing in the spindle. Is there something we should note about it or are we just posting pics of random parts off our trucks? :D

I think they do touch often. I can hear mine making a muted heavy rattle sound over bumps of a certain frequency and many have had dry bushings make noise as well. I suspect the clearance is extremely tight in an effort to restrict movement of the axle stub emanating from the birf if/as it wears. Thus the grease and grooves.

It is the new spindle design. Some folks asked me to post a picture of it so they could see how the bearing was in the spindle. The old design does not have a bearing in it.

Eric,
I asked for the picture. Thanks for posting it.
