So, the 1984 FJ60 I found on a driveway in California had been sitting for 12 years, unmoved. I picked it up for $2500.. she has 212k. So far I have replaced the water pump, thermostat, radiator and various belts and hoses. Obviously all the fluids have been flushed and replaced along with filters. Put a new battery in and fired her up. She seems to be running just fine. I put a 2 inch old man emu lift on it and replaced the rims and tires. Ran into a small issue with the 15“ x 8 inch rims as the steering knuckle rubbed slightly and so I had to put a small spacer on to rectify. Here’s a picture of how she sits now… Now the question is what do I do with the carburettor? I live in Commie Fornia and I would like to at some point rebuild The original carburettor but in the meantime what do you guys recommend to replace it with.? I have to get through smog.

I just got my '86 through CA smog, and it had been sitting a similar length of time.

Rebuilt the carb (mark or jim), replaced ALL of the vacuum hose, new (to me) air rail, rebuilt smog pump, replaced several VSV's, new catalytic converter, cleaned and tested the entire emissions system one component at a time.

After I had done ALL of that, it passed. And surprised me when it did.

get the 2F engine manual and the 2F emissions manual. Both are available in PDF format if you search this forum.

The engine manual will have instructions how to rebuild the carburetor if you feel up to it, but maybe you just need to spritz it with some carburetor cleaner, especially if it is "running fine". You can set the idle mixture by following the "lean drop" method that is in both manuals mentioned.

To pass smog in CA you will need to have all the original smog equipment. The 2F emissions manual will have information on the components of each system, how it works and how to determine it is working properly. First start by replacing all the vacuum tubing (as recommended above) with either OEM tubing or silicone tubing (regular buna tubing will not last long) and make sure the routing is correct per the 2F emissions manual. Then you can start testing the systems. When everything checks out, get a smog test and report back...

Attached are some additional diagrams of the vacuum tubing routing that might help figuring out what goes where.

Sweet rig. And killer price. You stole that thing.

I sent my carb off to an old guru here in CA. He got it back to me in about a week.

good luck with CA smog. Took me a more than a year to pass but I needed my head rebuilt.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a stock carb. It is arguably the best choice for this application. It is not a super complicated carb to rebuild ,using the FSMs of course. The good thing about doing it yourself is learning how it works and how to keep it running good. I run a stock carb and it never misses a beat even in cold weather. Try to do as much of your own work as you can. If you have to take it places constantly to be worked on it is expensive and usually the work done is crap. Nice cruiser ,Enjoy..

Great color and price.

You might want to drop into a smog shop and pay the $20 for a "pre-test", which will show you your emissions numbers at the pipe without any link to the state system. All they have to do is hook up the sniffer to the pipe, no big deal. If you're way off, there is no danger of getting the Gross Polluter tag.

This is a cheap and easy way to see where you're at, before you start replacing and rebuilding. Post the numbers here for feedback. There is always the chance that you're already good to go.

As many here in CA have learned (myself included), getting the truck to pass without any shenanigans can be a pain, but in the end, the whole process of figuring it out will leave you with a better-running truck.

If you need to pass smog (legitimately) you have no option but to use the stock carb.

Find a good core (look and ask in the wanted section) and have or rebuild that or pay your reg fees so you don't get dinged and rebuild yours.

The stock Aisan carb is reasonably complex so watch some of the videos and take your time or send it out.

I should add...im leaving Colorado for several months soon...so, if interested id need to know before Sat

Awesome find and the price made me cry! WOW that is a far better deal than I. Great looking cruiser, looks familiar to me.
