So this is my first thread, after reading the forums for a year or two... and i cant really get a clear answer on what to run given my current set up... I have the OME 4 inch lift installed with HFS shackles, and I was running 33s, and you would think i would have stayed happy.... but i found some 37s and put those on, and there is some minor rubbing...a lot less rubbing than i thought there would be... but still enough to justify some bonus lift... Im thinking i should just sack up and go spring over, but if a few inches of body lift would get me there i would do that too... I guess my concern is how obnoxious would it look with OME 4 inch springs and an SOA?... also since the lift is relatively new, would i need to replace my shocks for something with more travel? opinions are highly encouraged

heres the rig as is...

SOA with OME has been done before but it ends up being stupid high. You would definitely need new shocks. A lot of SOA guys on here run Bilsteins. A search of "SOA shocks" would probably return a lot of reading material.

You really need to re-gear your 62 to run those 37's.

In my personal opinion I would leave your 62 alone and put 33's back under it and see where you can't go. Lockers, if you don't have any are a huge help.

Welcome to MUD :D

Nice looking rig! Doesn't look too rusty for Maine. What gears are you running?

I am running an Aussie locker in the rear, and stock 4:11 gears, I was thinking of re gearing probly 4:88s... I hear theres grinding involved on anything bigger...

Thanks for the no rust comment haha, took some time but managed to find a few other decent parts trucks and sort of Frankensteined em together... '89 doors and hatch, '88 front fenders, and '90 everything else... wrapped it all up with a rustoleum paint job and bam... trail rig...

I dont have a ton of pictures of the work but here are some of the paint job...

Man that is sweet. Good job on the paint too. I like it.

What size tires are in the above photo when you are painting it?

I think if you go SOA you will want chevy springs or good OME stock height springs. You will gain 6-7" just by puting your springs on top of the axle.

You can regain some $ or offset costs by selling your current lift sprins if you go that route.

I think SOA will give more articulation and the SUA will be more stable. Just my thoughts.

Sweet truck.

Thanks!

the tires that were on it when i painted it were 33 12.5s... sold em when i found the 37s though... Ive been thinking about maybe going with a body lift and trying to squeeze the extra lift i need that way.. 2 inches seems like it could be a pain but might be enough to get me where i want to be in order to eliminate the rubbing issue... we'll see though i guess...

Hills....hell, what about the flats! He probably used 2 gears in that thing. This just gives him a justified excuse to regear now.

Oh yes gears are definately going in it... the 37s are a great way for me to justify a lot of stuff i want to do to that thing haha

As far as your shock question goes, it depends on where you change your shock mounts to.

A lot of people doing SAS on the cheap simply move the bottom U-bold plate that has the shock post on it to the top (and switch it to the opposite side) so that it is in the same location just on top of the axle now. Then I think they just use the same shock. This is going from stock springs and shocks to SOA. If you already have a lift with matching shocks then you will be fine to but you may end up a lot of lift.

the other option I often see is an axle ball reinforcement welded to the axle that has a shock mount on the top of the axle. Then they will weld in shock hoops or ford shock towers and match it up with a longer shock.

The rear should be the same by flipping the u-bolt plate to the top and use stock, or weld new tabs to the axle and get different shocks.

You should do a bunch of searching for SOA and see what people are doing as far as shocks etc. But I think it can be done using the same shocks.
