So I've been dealing with a good, local glass installer for a couple of days trying to find a quality replacement windshield for my '85 FJ60. PPG (PWG, or whatever it's now called) and Pilkington are both Chinese-made now. Pilkington was supposed to be made in Mexico, but came with a sticker, MADE in CHINA...

Installer says they're good quality, but I'd like to avoid Chinese-anything (except broccoli/beef w/ brown sauce :)), if possible.

Auto Glass shop has been in business forty years so I trust he knows his sources and isn't just jerking me around to sell what he can get...

Has anyone RECENTLY purchased or sourced a USA made or Non-Chinese window for their 60/62?

Sure, OE Toyota would be way nice, but at over $800 for the glass alone, I'm gonna have to pass on that.

Thanks.

:wrench:

I have an older Made in Mexico Pilkington and have had good luck with it not leaking or cracking.

I know you said RECENTLY but I like to throw in my two cents anyway!

i am interested too. I have ORIGINAL glass in my fj62 that i broke a few weeks ago trying to stuff a piece of pvc pipe in the truck. I put a giant crack in the window...:(

Peter, a Mexico-made Pilkington would have been fine, his book said, "Made in Mex..", and that's what I ordered, but as stated, it arrived with the China sticker, so he figures they switched but haven't updated the books, yet...

Spike, mind sharing where yer, shop is at?
Im in need of replacing my windshield.. N I don't trust the local shops ..
Peter, who did yah used.....?

I am in the same boat....looking for not only quality windshield but also quality installer too....care to share your installer's business name?

thank you in advance.

No worries... Installer is Economy Auto glass in Van Nuys. LINKY Just down the street from TLC4x4. He was aware of the locking strip/ no locking strip issues with the windshield gasket, so I guess he's done 'em before.

Place has been there since 1948 and last I was there about 20 years ago they did great work. Same guy owns the place, but now he's an old fawk, like me... :D

I'll ask a few more questions before the glass goes in and let him know there's Cruiserheads in the wings who want the same thing.

Yes, PWG is available, but it's Chinese-made. It's an American company paying a Chinese Co to make its products.

Hmm, If you guys source some out NOT made in China, I'm going to have to get mine replaced to.

I refuse to put anything on my 60 that's made in China...unless she's Hot!

I think the worst thing about 'made in China' is that some s***head sitting behind a desk somewhere
gets about 75% of your money- more than the US worker ever saw for actually
MAKING something- for selling us out.

Well, that and the environment, the economy, the labor conditions....

things that bug me...

I used Sun Auto Glass 1(800) 786-6148 Se Habla Espanol. They had the best price and came to my house to install it.

Well, called SOR and TLC4x4. Aftermarket windshield from SOR is Chinese, the brand they didn't know or wouldn't tell ... And as an idea of their markup, it's $299 OTC only, no shipping. The quotes I'm getting for an installed Pilkington Chinese glass is just over $200.

TLC4x4 told me to go to the guy I'm already dealing with.

Maybe Tinker or someone with experience in the business will chime in.

:meh:

My front WS is in pieces after removing the glued on rubber gasket for a pending pain job. I am definitely in the market and agree that the OEm $$$ is not practical.

I'm scheduled for Friday morning installation. I'll see if the owner will let me take pix of the install and I'll ask questions along the way as to what materials he's using (quality)...

Looks like I don't have a reasonable choice getting Chinese glass. I may regret it, but at least I can't argue with the price.

Thanks Spike...
I gotta call my insurance back..

Let us know how it all works out for yah..

So other than the obvious "It's not made in America" what is wrong with the Chinese glass? I live in the high desert and we get bad wind storms that will throw around a lot of sand/rock so should I ever need to get a replacement I would like to know the difference.
