I did plugs wires, dist cap and rotor recently, for my first time in decades, and I got a bad FM radio tick afterwards. In checking that I had good connections everywhere I got good snaps on the plugs but the other ends of the wires don't seem to fit snugly into the distributor cap. Shouldn't they? The plastic covers on the ends snap down nicely but the metal tabs that go into the dist. cap don't feel tight. Should they?
Also when I pulled them out to re-seat them there was a little grey carbon spot on two of them. I figure this could be the source of my ticking sound coming through the radio, but why is this happening?
I used NGK wires and a Bosch 03389 cap. Both appear to be the correct part. But shouldn't the wire ends fit snugly into the sockets before the little cap is snapped on?

I've never had problems with genuine Toyota wires, cap & rotor. I figure these parts will last 10 years and 100,000 miles so any dollar savings is moot. I actually use Toyota/denso sparkplugs too, cuz they're cheap

x2 use OEM wires/cap/rotor - versus aftermarket stuff and then coming on mud asking why it doesn't fit quite right... :)

cheers,
george.

X3 OEM parts. Never had an issue with fit.

ngk wires work great for me, but there is no reason not to use the OEM cap.

The wires on the other hand are outrageously expensive.

Cheap compared to filling up the fuel tank every week or two or three (depending on your distance traveled).

For something that we change every 10 years or more, I'd say the per year cost is VERY much a bargain.

cheers,

Well, we have other vehicles so the 80 isn't our daily driver either, but that's a moot point for something that you only replace 10 years or so. I guess your leads will last even longer if it sits a lot of the time - as long as the critters don't get in and gnaw on them :)

$100 for 10 years (or longer) seems pretty good value to me as a consumable. Wish the consumable fuel/oil was as cheap over that period of time :)

The link is amusing - never knew I had an 8 cylinder 4.5L under the hood...vrrmm vrrmm

cheers,
george.

Cheap compared to . . .

after finding more than 20-year old OEM dizzy wires on my 40 in 2005 and it was running well, I am SO totally convinced of OEM dizzy wires
