Just grabbed a '23 GX Premium Plus pvt party sale! Big step up from the '98 4runner 5spd manual (bought new in '98) that i've been driving every day for well...26yrs. Still love the 4runner. Hoping to get it back on the road this year. (hit an elk). So, right now I'm in the "protect this thing so it lasts 30yrs" mode atm. A few GX questions:

1. Can the '23 windows be cracked open using the remote?

2. I saw this video on changing the remote's settings to avoid a relay attack. Tried to navigate to the same settings but didn't see the same options. Can we do the same thing in newer models?

3. Seat Protection. I've tried the following sources but they don't carry covers for the '23: wetokole, covercraft, equipt1 and it seemed seatcoversunlimited.com was playing some pricing games i didn't appreciate. So has anyone tried ordering a seat cover for a previous year's seats and had it fit well on a '23? I know canvasback is an option but they don't seem as form fitting as some of the others I mentioned. Open to suggestions. My 2nd row is captain seats and I'd eventually like to do the 3rd row delete.

4. Has anyone put 255/80/r17 tires on stock suspension? This might need to be a thread unto its own. Wondering how much fender liner bending I'd need to do or if something more drastic would be needed (like a body mount chop). Also wondering if it will fit in the stock spare location if deflated. I've seen some comments that if the rims have a positive offset it might work. This thing floats compared to my 4runner. So a suspension change is in the future but just wanted a tire lift to start....and some different rims (they're god awful ugly gray/silver), preferably black. But I don't want the tires to stick out too far at all. I'd like to keep a positive offset to minimize mud on the doors.

A few other things I've ordered to protect the truck (I have a dog btw) are listed below. Maybe it will help others. I'm actually going to try to use the dog barrier as a bug screen in front of the condenser/radiator. It looks the perfect size, not expensive and already has grommets. Probably couldn't make it for less. Hopefully it fits well.

Looking forward to exploring in the GX!! (man this is going to take a while to feel right. it feels so classy compared to my old 4runner. i'm a simple guy)

First off, welcome to the forum and your new GX!
To answer/respond to a couple of your questions:
  1. Do you know what year GX is being shown in that video? Is it the same model and year as yours?
  2. My wife has the Wet Okle covers in her Taco crew cab, all seats covered for the last 6 years. They still look great! They have been amazing and this is from a family that surfs most days of the week, off roads, skis, etc. so they get serious use between salt water, dust, mud, snow and so on. So I personally would vouch for Wet Okle. The ONLY issue is, and this is a personal thing, they WILL smell like wetsuit material for at least a year or so, depending upon how much you let your interior air out. My wife and I have surfed all our lives so it's no big deal for us. Just saying.
  3. As for fit, I don't believe there is any difference in seat design in any year GX460. The only consideration is if you have seat coolers, you won't feel them with seat covers. The GX seat coolers are pretty poor and don't push a lot of air, so covering them will just about negate any air at all coming out.
Hope this helps!

The relay prevention can be accomplished in multiple different ways.

1)$$$$$ igla, drone, or other canbus lockout.
2)$ simply press and hold lock button on keyfob while double clicking unlock button (the remote led should confirm with a specific led sequence)
3)$keep the keys in a farday pouch away from the gx.

Window programming needs a trip to a person with techstream.

If you can try to get the interior cleaned professionally and then apply a ceramic coating. If thats not in the budget, xpress interior detailer spray, followed up with 303 aerospace every few weeks or months.

Appreciate it!

the video was '13 RX i believe.

interesting that the seats are similar over the years. guess i might have to test that. the companies i spoke with suggested there would be differences in order to get a tight, custom fit.

yeah, the neoprene smell might not be for me. been liking the ballistic material cover types. need to see what other options are available.

i agree the seat coolers are subpar. but i knew that going in.

i really want to get to the bottom of this relay hack and whether the '23's have the settings to disable as in the video. seems like such an easy bit of prevention.

thanks again!

so if i do the press/hold lock button technique, does it have to be done ea time i leave the car or is this the way to achieve a permanent state (as the video's technique does = set it once and i dont have to toy with it again)? does it have to be done for ea transmitter? trying to understand if this technique is transmitter specific or car specific (ie setting works for both key fobs).

im investigating techstream. so far ive figured out how to run a virtual machine running xp. i need to find the vti dongle (the two linked in Wasting Time in the Woods w Jake are unavailable), and see if any other drivers are required. not sure what version of techstream is best for my MY or if there's no such thing as "best" when it comes to techstream. so hopefully, i wont have to depend on a third party for access to settings.

ceramic coating...inside? never heard of that. interesting. appreciate the tip!

Transmitter based that resets if you go to use that fob for any reason.

I believe their exists an option in techstream to completely turn off keyless entry at the doors, but idk.

A faraday cage will achieve the same without having to follow any steps.

Thanks. I don't want to completely disable my keyless transmitters. I just want to protect from the relay hack and I don't want the faraday cage stuff. No need, if I can just disable the feature that's prone to attack via relay.

No idea what this means, sorry. "Transmitter based that resets if you go to use that fob for any reason."

If i do your technique, do i need to do it each time I access/leave the car? will it apply to both fobs or do i need to program both of them to do it?

Thanks!

What you are looking for then is going to be in techstream only, by disabling keyless entry (approach vehicle, place hand on door handle, vehicle unlocks) you would have to enter the gx via clicking on the keyfob.

A couple of things has come up in this thread worth mentioning:
First, considering you live in Phoenix, Wet Okle is in Costa Mesa, CA which isn't that long of a drive if you'd want to spend the weekend here on the coast.
The reason is, Wet Okle will, for no extra cost install your seat covers for free once they're made. We had them do that for my wife's truck and they came out perfect. Wet Okle is the ONLY seat cover manufacturer that I've EVER seen that the covers don't wrinkle, sag, buckle, shift, rip, or anything, next to an actual factory seat cover replacement.

Second, one thing to consider with your key fob and my wife and I found this out the hard way after ending a great day at Disneyland. Got to my rig when Disneyland closed and lost my key fob. Thinking about it, I couldn't call AAA or anyone else because even if I could get in my vehicle, I couldn't start it. Was able to get hold of Lexus 24hr help and they said, "Have it towed to the nearest Lexus dealer and have a new key made the next day." WHAT??? And pay $400.00????
Eventually called my daughter (at around 10:30pm) to bring the spare key from home (about 40 miles away). She came, got the key, went home.
For me the moral of the story is that I'll NEVER let that happen to me again!! I couldn't even imagine if that happened on a road trip or overlanding!
Also think about that there is no place on the outside of your vehicle you can hide a remote key fob without it working when anyone touches your door handle!
Solution: Purchased a new key fob from Amazon: Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/Keymall-Replacement-2010-2020-271451-5290-9904-60590/dp/B0CQYC43XN/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?crid=1H81D3MVFM0HD&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.wT-JBpwrWvIlXodqWpJiH3XhK7oe98g2avHzfJ1SV6SrkS4iLuZ9SL5e2EymUJhp.7jQ2-3dwLPr12NkofMrXs3Y3lJWdqrsOhxviN2YclKM&dib_tag=se&keywords=PN%3A+89904-60590&qid=1720205959&sprefix=pn+89904-60590%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-1-fkmr0.
Programmed it myself with Techstream (again, Amazon): Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BCNPDDG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
After doing all that, I had a "physical" duplicate key made of the "hard" key inside the key fob. This new duplicate physical key is now hidden (without the key fob) on the outside of my rig. I have the actual key fob hidden inside my rig, inside a small Faraday pouch (Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GDD35GH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) with the battery remove and in the pouch also.
If I should ever lose that key fob again, I can get into my vehicle, get the factory key fob, and be driving again.
I highly recommend anyone who has a Lexus or any other vehicle that uses a remote to touch open their vehicles to consider something as I outlined above.
Also, a little side note, went back to Disneyland 6 months later, and just for giggles when to their lost and found, lo and behold, they had my lost key fob! So now I have an extra, besides what I keep in my rig.

Appreciate the warning! Are you saying if I had a spare key made, I couldn't get the car started without also having a FOB?

Correct. There are no electronics in the little pull-out key in the key fob. The electronics is all in the little plastic case. The key will ONLY get into your car. You'll see it all when you get around to changing the battery. You MUST have the fob to engage the ignition.
And I don't believe there is a combination key/fob, photo below, like what we had for our old 100 series Landcruisers available for GX's.
1720213430482.jpeg

My "extra" key that I had made looks like a regular old fashioned, flat metal key, not shaped like the one that clips into the key fob.

I haven't tried this yet, but from what I understand (heard), even if your key fob battery is dead... dead, you should be able to touch your key fob to the button and that should still work to start your vehicle. But like I said, have never tried that.
I'm thinking if holding with a dead fob should work, what about no battery?
I'm not an electrical engineer, but wonder if the fob is kind of like transponders that are powered by radio signals from the ignition so a battery isn't needed if it's close enough to the ignition/transmitter? For those who use transponders for toll roads (myself included), you'll probably know what I mean about those transponders not having batteries.

update on the items above.

-very happy with the floor mats and cargo mat.
-i like the arm cushion but it will definitely have to be taken out once in a while a shaken out. it kind of catches things in its weave (ie, my 91yr old dad's dead elbow skin. yuck! it wont just blow away)
-also got the veepeak obd2 reader and paired it very easily w/ FusionOBD. I need to get their lexus addon pack (purchased within the app) to get both trans temps.
-also grabbed an Akron phone/tablet mount. mounted it to the passenger seat's bolt. it shakes a bit. trying to figure out the least destructive/semi-permanent way to use the center console to prevent the shaking.
-the dog barrier, while seemingly durable material for using as a bug net, it was too long.
-also asked lexus if there were any differences in the front seats or hoods vs a '22. (still looking for seat covers and a hood deflector). they said not to their knowledge.

hope this helps a future newbie.

Hood deflector might make the windshield area more prone to stone ships. I would say ppf the front end if anything.
I would get seat covers, but apply some type of conditioner or coating underneath to keep the pleather or leather in tact.

How did you attach the door covers?

Seat jackers installed. have a 2hr drive later today.

the link to the mirror covers isnt what i thought. theyre actually replacements; not a protective cover.

Not sure if this will help, but you could go vinyl wrap the mirrors. That small amount of vinyl is cheap and all you need is a heat gun and a little patience.
It won't protect from anything hard, but it'll help from getting light scratches, and it's cheap and easy to replace.

i like this idea. thx!

seat jackers made a noticeable difference in comfort. happy.

For other newbies... the manual didn't say anything about remote start. I learned if you hit the lock button on your fob 3x and hold it on the 3rd press, the car will remote start. I think pressing the lock button twice and holding the 2nd time will stop the engine.

also, just an fyi...you can connect your phone to the entertainment system using bluetooth and block lexus from accessing call records, texts and contacts using settings on your phone.

I put 255/80s on stock suspension on oem wheels, fit like a charm, had to pull the front wheel liners forward and back respectively.

Those tires cupped and I went with 285/70R17 LT Revo 3s and couldn't be happier. I am lifted 1.75 F and 1.5 R now via 5100s and rear spacers.
