Got this message from the NMOHVA Prez today:

Your club, individually, needs to email Julie Bain, TMP director, and ask specifically for "a DEIS hard copy, a inclusive CD, and all hardcopy, underlying specialists' reports." The request needs to have the individual's home address and name. Even if a club member doesn't think he'll comment, he still needs to ask for the documents; these requests will add to the count, demonstrating the community is intently interested and engaged.

jbain@fs.fed.us

For timesake, an LC club rep can/should go to the SFNF office and pick them up. Mail will take 5-10 days.

***************

I'll send in my request. Who else is willing to send in their request? Anybody who works in SF (wink wink) willing or interested in being the person that picks up the packages?

I'll send in a request.

I sent in my request, and said I would pick the information up on Tuesday (I won't be in SF until then). I'll bring them down to ABQ that day. Anybody that wants me to bring theirs down let me know.

Pick a set up for me Steve and thanks for the offer!

I don't think it's actually released to the public yet. I haven't seen any chatter on it being available, just that we need to get our requests sent in to Ms. Bain so they are prepared for us when it's time to pick them up.

Mike - I'm assuming that you would still need to send in the request, and mention that you will have someone pick it up for you at their office in SF? Maybe Marc can verify that for us.

Steve -

Thanks for the offer to pick these up for us. I sent in my request this morning, and I asked Ms. Bain to notify me when the package is ready for pickup. I think Marc is probably right, that we need to request the packages first, and then they will let us know when they are ready for pickup. By the way, I did identify myself as a member of the High Desert Cruisers in my e-mail. Maybe that will be a good way for their office to group the packages together for pickup.

Marc - Thanks for passing the word on this. It's important.

mine is sent and I asked for it to be in the High Desert Cruiser pick up.

No trouble at all.

I received this on Friday, and let her know I will be picking some up when they are ready:

"None of those documents are ready yet. We expect to have the DEIS ready at the end of June. I will put you on the list for a paper copy and a CD. If you want to pick them up, that is fine; right now I don't have an exact date for you, though.

The specialist reports will be available for downloading on the internet at : Travel Management Planning, Santa Fe National Forest - USDA Forest Service.
If you need hard copies of them, you will have to request them through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The information on how to do that is here: FOIA - Southwestern Region, USDA Forest Service. The Forest Service has 20 days to process FOIA requests.

Regards,

- Julie

Yes, I sent in the request via e-mail and I got the same response that Steve posted above.

Same here. Has anyone looked for the "specialist reports"? I went to the website, but it wasn't immediately clear where I would find those. I certainly would rather download them than go the FOIA route.

I asked Julie how much time we would gain by picking them up and this was her response:
"We normally plan it so everyone gets it at the same time. For example, if we are ready to post it on the website on a Friday, we'd mail them out the preceding Tuesday or Wednesday. The other thing we try to do is mail it and post it several days before the comment period starts, like we did with the scoping. In that case, we had it out on July 10 but the comment period didn't start until July 17. "

So it may be counterproductive to pick them up - I think we should just let her mail them.

Good that you all are requesting hard copies early--they are really pushing to send CDs because of printing costs, so once they are out of hardcopies, they will be gone. Maybe the early requests will encourage them to print enough, we'll see.

I was told end of June early July, also, so don't look for them any earlier.

I wouldn't be surprised if specialist reports dont get posted until about the time the document is released. Give 'em hell!!

Donate to NMOHVA through the United Way:

June NMOHVA Newsletter

"Did you know that you can support your company's involvement in the community and preserve, protect, and promote New Mexico's OHV trails at the same time? Many New Mexico employers hold campaigns encouraging their staff to give to the United Way. This is a great way for companies to show community involvement. As a United Way donor, you can designate your gift to any 501(c) 3 organization and that includes NMOHVA. All you need to do is specify the New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance and the amount on the "Select Giving" line of the pledge form provided to you by your workplace. Then the United Way will pass the full amount on to NMOHVA without taking any fees. This is a win/win for you and your employer. Help your company be a contributor to the community and help support NMOHVA's goal of promoting responsible OHV recreation through education, safety training, land conservation, and access."

Thanks Steve, this is an excellent suggestion. I have been our company's UW campaign manager for about 7 years and knew this detail but it never occurred to me that NMOHVA would be eligible.

Most companies have their UW campaigns in the September-October time frame so we should bump this thread around that time.
