I have received messages from Sandia Jeep Club lately that the Carson NF is releasing their travel management EA for the west side, which includes the Webb Trail at Abiquiu. BLM is also doing one for northern part of the state; I'm not sure if this includes Farmington or not. I have emails with more info if you are interested.

Lastly, I heard SFNF travel management EIS is at printers and will be available toward end of month.

I just received this:

"Hi Steve -

We've set aside the copies of the SFNF DEIS for travel management you and the other High Desert Cruisers requested. We've bundled them for you since you are the designated pick-up guy. We'll leave them at the front desk.

We're open from 8:00am to 4:30 pm.

Regards,

Julie

Unfortunately I am not going to Santa Fe today, so unless someone wants to pick them up and bring them down they will have to wait until Monday.

I'd say stop by my office and say Hi, but I'll be in the field. Apparently the ABQ journal and the SF New Mex papers both did articles on this, too, but I haven't seen them.

Sure isn't a good future for OHV users on this forest. :crybaby:

Confusion reigns supreme. After Julie told me that she mails the packages out in advance so everybody gets them at the same time whether they pick them up or get them mailed, I told her to mail them. When she said she had some to pick up I decided not to convolute the situation more and just pick them up. So, I now have three extras - not all of them. All I have are mine, Shawn's, Evan's, and
Brian Cessop's. If you ordered a set and don't have it, you might want to call and find out if yours is being mailed or what.

Shawn, Evan, and Brian, call me at 9 8 0 0 3 0 3 so we can figure out how to get yours to you. PM's sent too)

Once again this is bad, bad, bad. There will be a series of meetings for public comment. Same as last time. You can go to the website to put in comments, and after the comment period of 45 days, it will be closed. You can not appeal if not on the original comment list, so be sure to give them your opinion

Forest Service Proposes to Close Over Half of Santa Fe National Forest Roads

The Santa Fe National Forest finally released its draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Travel Management to the public today. The Forest Service is proposing to close over 2900 miles (53%) of the existing roads on the Forest. Even the most 'vehicle-friendly' alternative considered closes nearly half of the roads currently available.

This will affect all motorized vehicles: cars, trucks, Jeeps, motorcycles, and ATVs. It will also have a profound impact on all members of the public who use the Forest including hunters. According to the proposal, there are currently 5458 miles of roads and trails that people are using. The Forest Service's drastic proposal reduces this to around 2500 miles.

The public has 45 days to comment on these issues by submitting letters or emails. The Forest Service's proposal and alternatives are in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Travel Management on the Santa Fe National Forest. The full text of the draft document is on the Santa Fe National Forest Travel Management website. The end date for 45 day comment period has not yet been established as the deadline is based on the date the official notice is publised in the Federal Register. Only those people or organizations who provide comments during this 45-day comment period will be eligible to appeal the final decision when it is released later this year.

The purpose of the proposal is implementing Travel Management by designating a motorized road and trail system on the Santa Fe National Forest. Designation will include class of vehicle and time of year for allowable motor vehicle use. The decision will result in the publication of a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) that shows when and what roads are open. After the MVUM has been released, ALL other motorized travel will be prohibited.

Eight public meetings will be held August 8-18 in the various communties in and around the Santa Fe National Forest. This will be an opportunity to meet with the Forest Service and ask questions about the project and the proposed closures. The format for each of these meetings will include an open house, a presentation, a question and answer session, and a listening session.

You will find a link the detailed time and location of each meeting to the left.

Comments can be submitted by postal mail, email, fax. hand delivery or orally. Specific instructions and contact information are available here.

If you have questions about the DEIS or making comments, please contact the Travel Management Project Leader, Julie Bain, at (505) 505-438-5443 or sftravelmgt@fs.fed.us.

Remember: Only those people or organizations who provide comments during this 45-day comment period will be eligible to appeal the final decision!

I got a message from my friend in NMOHVA. He says HDC isn't receiving official messages from NMOHVA. We are a member of the association so we probably should have an email address on their records for sending messages to. Who should that person be?

I know Steve H and I get them and I think a few others. one of us usually posts it to this thread (most often Steve).

I think so. It sounds like they've had some email list issues and he told me they didn't have an address for our club. I told him that some are getting it.

New Info - They're trying to push a large bill through with severe repercussions for New Mexico access. See "Other" at the bottom:

not 4x related, as you will never see OHVs in the VCNP, but they are in a comment period for a public access and use EIS right now. I don't know much more than that, but the move to the Park Service is off the radar at the moment, so they continue with "the experiment" for a while longer.
