Hi all,

I have recently become the proud owner of a 1999 Land Cruiser 4.2D. This is not only my first Land Cruiser, but the first 4x4 / SUV type vehicle I've ever owned. (Well, years back I had access to a Lexus RX400h and then an NX, they were not mine and, well, not the same kind of vehicle. ) The main reason for getting the cruiser, as I tend to refer to it, is for towing one of my other cars to and from race tracks. I figured, I'd just go straight to something that can pull any size trailer without having to worry too much about weight limits (within reason!).

The car is running just fine. I've done a full engine service with new oil, oil/air/fuel filters, timing belt, fan belt, AC/heater belt and general tuning. There appears to have been water ingress in the car as I've found some surface rust and mould in places inside. I traced this to the high mounted LED brake light, which I have sealed. Fingers crossed that should have fixed it! The main 'problems' I have are that the electric reach/tilt of the steering wheel is dead, the alarm only flashes but makes no noise, and the automatic radio aerial / antenna is broken. Oh, and the electric lumbar adjustment died a few days back. I'm kind of surprised at all these electrical faults. Not like other old Toyotas I've had.
I've read through the thread for the tilt/reach problem and I can't seem to find a fault. The switch is joined up with the steering angle sensor. When I find some time, I will start measuring my way through.
Being used to other older Toyotas, I find the original service manuals great. Is there a BGB for the LC?

Also, you can find an Electrical Wiring Diagram (aka EWD) and collision repair manual. All are in the Resources section of the forum.

It's probably your tilt and telescopic column motors that have failed. They're not to bad to change out.
Also, having a second person when fixing the antenna is very helpful. You just need an extra hand cycling the antenna up/down while you're feeding the antenna into the housing.

Thank you. I just found them after posting. What I didn't see is one for the 1HD-FTE. But I have found one for the engine separately.

I tried manually turning the motors but they both appear locked. Maybe this is by design to make sure nothing moves. Would both motors really fail simultaneously? Before I start firing parts at this, could the tilt and telescopic adjustment have been disabled altogether in the ECU?

The motor is whirring, but the cable is broken off. I can pull out the telescopic antenna from the wing but there's no cable attached to it. I need to get to the actual motor and somehow get what's left of the cable out.

Welcome, this forum is very active with tons of "by the book" DIY advice and people are super supportive, it's really a treasure. Glad to have you aboard.

Post pics and keep us updated on your progress! 👍

Had another theory about the non-working steering wheel adjustment yesterday: There should be a beep/buzzer when you have the key in the ignition lock and the driver's door open, but there isn't. Hence I figured, that since this is a really annoying feature, I could imagine that the previous owner may have disabled it by simply unplugging the "key unlock warning" switch, which would stop the beeping and also disable the tilt/telescopic adjustment. But no. I measured continuity in the switch and it's working and plugged in. Oh well, at least that possibility has been checked off the list.

In other news; in its previous life, my cruiser has lived in the country side, and it wears the scars. It looks like it's been dragged forwards, backwards, and upside-down through thorny hedges. The paintwork is seriously scratched. So I wanted to see if it could be improved. After a few hours or working with clay bar, polish and wax, it came out really nicely. Only deeper scratches are visible if you look closely and at an angle. I'm also amazed at how few stone chips the leading edge of the bonnet has, considering it's done 100k miles over the last 26 years.

Both of my motors were bad on my 99 LX when I got it. I replaced both and it's now good to go.
You'll need to pull the inner fender on the passenger side to disconnect the antenna housing. Just one bolt if I'm remembering correctly to release the antenna housing from its mounting. I think most people remove the wheel. I was able to put my LX AHC height in High and just keep the wheel turned for access.
