Wanted New Member looking a 40 in NC

Hi everyone, first off thanks for all the info you guys provide. I've been interested in fj's for years and reading the forums off and on.

I'm now finally in the position to purchase my first landcrusier!!

I've been searching craigslist for weeks and finding its not as easy to find cruisers on the east coast as it seems it is to find them on the west coast, so I figured this would be the place to come.

I'm looking for a 76 or newer, mostly stock, minimal rust of course, and one that runs good as my occupation in residential construction doesn't translate too well to fixing mechanical issues. I used to have a jeep I did a lot of work on, so I'm comfortable with most anything short of engine work. Definitely want a hardtop.

This would mainly be a weekend driver to drive around town, and either to the beach or mountains, maybe some off roading occasionally.


I did find this one on CL today is anyone has any opinions.

Look on the for sale section of the nc club. There's a guy who has first hand info on that truck.

Thanks for the replies. I actually called about that one the other day, but I think I'd like to be more in the $5,000 - $6000 range. I need to get a tractor for this year too, so I was hoping to keep it around 5. I guess it would be ok to put off a tractor another year though!!

I called about the one I posted the link to this morning. Sounded like he has several people lined up to come take a look, and said it burns oil and smokes a bit. Not sure how big of deal that is to take care of?? All depends on the cause it it I know. Any opinions... I think I'd rather get something that runs clean and deal with cosmetic issues before having to tackle the engine.

You're prob going to struggle to find one in that price range. Id guess the 6-8k range is more where you will land with what you are looking for.

Stay patient though. You may see a thread by fjenthusiast on the ONSC forum. He stayed patient and finally found one!

Yeah I'd spend 8 if I have to to find the right one. I'm not in a big hurry to get it, so I can wait.

Any particular things I should look for to avoid?

Get one from out west. Out here all the cheap ones are pure junk rust buckets.

I'm thinking that might be a good route to go. I got a lead on one from a guy in NV last night about one he had bought recently but doesn't have time to work on with his ongoing project.

Anyone have any experience buying from across the country? I would have to buy site unseen and have it shipped, there's no way I can go that far just to look at one and have to ship it home anyway if I like it.

My brother lives in Los Angeles that's where I got my 40 from. He has his dealers license. He likes British junk though. I'm sure he would help you out for a small fee.

I agree with the advice here. I think the biggest mistake people make is looking for the vehicle they want close to home. it's great if you can find it but you need to be open to shipping it from wherever the right vehicle happens to reside.

Jumping on agreeing bandwagon. I purchased mine in northern Idaho and drove her to Tulsa, OK. I highly recommend shipping unless you know it's highly dependable and your looking for adventure!
