i am looking at the same set-up as far as 4" lift and same tires and size. How does it feel and handle?

It was a little nerve racking at first. I haven't driven a non-power steering car before, and with the lift and tires and size of the steering wheel, plus driving it through downtown ATL highway to get it home 10 minutes after I bought it, I was alert to say the least. Since I don't have a way to compare it prior to these additions, I would say go for it. It's cake around town, but not a fan of 60+mph highway runs. I'm dealing with a little bit of a back firing issue at highway speeds too, which adds to it.

So now that I have it, of course I want to buy tons of stuff I can't afford and make her better. Here is my list of what I would like to do.

  • Rebuild the carb, which will be done this week.
  • The PO bought two newer style front doors. They're the thicker style with updated hardware. I need to get them painted and want to use them as my doors when the hard top is on. They're thicker and the current doors do have some rust issues at the top.
  • My dad is handy with a torch and welder, so I want to take the 1972 doors and make them into half doors for the summer. Let me know if this action would be considered one of the seven deadly sins and I shouldn't modify them.
  • Add tow plate to the rear bumper
  • Replace the entire exhaust
  • Here is where I would like recommendations. I can't decide if I should re-upholster the front driver seat, or replace the bench with two buckets from a later model cruiser. I kind of like the fact that my bench seat is a bit rare as I believe it was only on the 71 and early 72 cruisers. But I like the look of the later model seats better. What do you guys think?

Mods further down the road:

  • Disc brakes, at least in the front
  • Roof rack
  • Some type of stereo, but no holes in the dash or doors.

I would definetly replace the seats. I am sure someone would trade a case of wine for them. Btw, did I say I was in the wine business? Also I just bought a 72 which I am going to use while I restore my 69. You have a great car. So what was the cost? I am sure everyone wants to know.

haha...a good bit less than what he was asking. Honestly though, the PO took really good care of it and had a lot of fun driving it around in his 20's and 30's. I think he's glad he sold it to me who can now enjoy it while I'm in my mid 20's. I say I'll be keeping her for as long as i can, but maybe when I'm in my mid 30's, i'll sell it to some kid.

or maybe I should just thank the economy, and keep it forever!
