Why not buy used engine and rebuild. Buy the short block from yota then use your head and accessories
I looked at both routes but it is < $1k cheaper to rebuild vs getting an entirely new engine based on my mechanic’s invoice. And that is getting a very cheap shortblock from paul. If i bought new from toyota it would be much more expensive to rebuild.

Would you go that route still having the cost information I am working with?

Yup, that $1k extra takes away a lot of risk.

I bought a used engine last year for mine. Lower mileage than my broken one. I heard it run and saw the oil pressure. I was going to swap it in and run it but decided to just reseal it and do the head gasket while it was on the eng stand. As I tore it down I started seeing where someone had been in there. Long story short, crank was good, bearing was starting to spin, cyls needed hone, piston's were way in spec, head was on its last leg, someone sanded the block deck and it needed to be flattened. Both block and head are at the end of their spec but good now.
When I was done refreshing everything, parts and machining the long block was about 2k (I assembled and installed). When you add in all the extra stuff I did , radiator, all hoses, new trans cooler, water pump, power steering pump, fan, shroud.....I was over 3k.

The biggest issue was there are very few machine shops left in our area and fewer who will set up our cyl head. The machine work took 4 months due to the back log. I looked at the reman engines and based on my lifetime working in the industry, I wasn't comfortable buying one.

Edit: our motors are not hard to rebuild, its the head that sucks to do unless you have the equipment and know how to do that style. The ones who can do these properly are getting scarce.

I bought mine with a completely seized engine. I chose to buy a scrap engine and rebuild, but a good running junk yard engine can be had for under $1,000. I had offers as low as $400.

It's daunting pulling that big motherf'er and reinstalling it but it is not that difficult. Under $1000 in all new rubber and gaskets and you'll be back on the road with everything under the hood good to go for another 20 years.

Don't despair op, tis but a minor setback.

Since people keep saying buy a "new" longblock from toyota - want to make sure you understand that's not an option. They don't sell long blocks.
You can still get shortblocks for ~3-4k I believe.

I bought mine with a thrown rod and rebuilt it myself. Bought a running longblock from a certain diesel shop in oregon a few years back for $600 to tear down and rebuild, though after ripping into it probably could have just plopped it in and gone. In the end I spent about 6-7k i think over a long winter rebuilding it.

I can't recommend buying an engine from motorworld or any of those sites since you don't know what components they're using. Too high of risk with cheap gaskets/seals that don't quite fit right.

If its truly your dream rig and you want to keep it for a long time, do it once and do it right. Picking up a motor from @Deathvalleypaul who i will also endorse as being great to work with, and doing a simple rebuild will put you time and money ahead of an inevitable time bomb from enginedepotworldbuiltbypeoplewhodontcare.com

Who's stating "long" block from Toyota?

I agree on not doing the reman engine places, as they are "quick and dirty" typically and even though they have a warranty, you still have to pay for removal and install as many times as it takes, even under warranty.

That is a good point on labor

Someone else here, recently ran his numbers and was very close to reman costs by having his head rebuilt locally, then buying a NEW Toyota SHORT block. He had a hop assemble and install. I don't know if he stated his final costs, but they seemed "reasonable" for the warranty that there is and the peace of mind of NEW Toyota parts.

As I get older, I am more willing to do it RIGHT once and pay more. Maybe @8cam ?

I just had my transmission rebuilt, not the head. However @smittycrusher had his top end done at the same shop ACC Garage. I'll let him chime in here, but they did a great job for me on the transmission.

Sorry for the headache, but what did the PO say- refusing any recourse? Did you buy it knowing it had issues or were you told "i'd drive it to the east coast tomorrow'?
