In case it helps anyone else while researching and working on my planned intercooler install. I once again visited frozenboost.com today. I was surprised to see (or I just had not noticed) that they have a couple more barrel intercooler models now available. A couple of which I think will make the install far easier for a 3B install.

Barrel Water to Air Intercoolers

This looks just like my 4x10 PWR Barrel. Same as the Denco stuff. If you contact frozeboost ask them which it is they are selling.:cheers:

why barrel instead of the square ones with less pressure drop?

educate me. :)

It seem like using the square/rectangle ones, you could just remove the stock pipe that crosses the valve cover, and put in the air/water unit.

I guess you could do the same w/ the barrel, but they cost more and are smaller.

For me it was about fit and price. Fit: The 4x 10 or 6 x 10 barrel can sit either right on top of or right before or behind the factory cross over intake tube. I have to admit that honestly I never thought of removing/replacing/altering the factory crossover tube. I guess if you were really tight for space you could cut out most of the mid section of that cross over tube and then weld the round air intake nozzle back onto the stub just before the intake manifold spreads out. Connect either your barrel or box to the stub.:hhmm: The concept has the advantage of a more efficient air intake routing. The disadvantage is that by removing or cutting and welding the factory tube you lose the bracket on the exhaust side of the engine which the air intake tube is bolted to and which gives the factory setup a solid foundation.The only other disadvantage that I see is that by removing or replacing the factory tube, what do you secure the barrel or box to? I cinch tied my barrel to the factory tube and it sits nice and snug. No movement, no vibrations. Very easy install. Again I suppose that someone with creative fab skills could work out a bracket and a way to bolt the setup to the engine. It would be interesting to see. Price: I picked up a slightly used PWR unit on ebay (barrel, pump, rad and fan, etc) for just over $500.00USD. :meh: :cheers:

snap a photo? I'd like to see how you did it.

No sweat, though it might be a day or so as things are heating up at work. I gotta say you really got me thinking about this idea of eliminating the factory crossover tube from the equation. In looking my setup over the easiest way would be to eliminate the crossover tube entirely and let the intercooler drop in in its place. I´d have to get a machine shop to do a flange with a stub pipe. The flange would connect where the crossover tube connects to the intake manifold. Silicon hose would connect the barrell to the stub pipe. The same shop would do a bracket to support the barrel using the current bracket support on the exhaust side and the bolts from the throttle cable bracket on the intake side. :hhmm:

Given the time table that I´m on at present to get ready to wrap up my work assignment I´m going to follow through with the setup that I have going in now. However, after going by the shop this afternoon eyeballing it and talking it through with the owner perhaps in a year from now I´ll look at cleaning up the tube routing via this idea. Thanks.:cheers:

cool. I'd still love to see a photo of what you did. always nice to have examples.

Sandcruiser ;
I was at the machine shop today getting some stuff made for an aux tank. I asked how long it would take to do a stubby crossover piece. It´ll be ready Monday afternoon. I´ll post up pics in my build thread so as not to completely hijack the OP´s thread here.

John

cool!
looking forward to seeing how it works!
