New H55 5 speed …is this normal shifting?

You're not supposed to run gl5 in these if I remember correctly, if it's specifically advertised as yellow metal safe you might be okay though

Check the product data sheets on GL-5 oils before using.

Most GL-5 oils are now OK in older boxes.

The issues with yellow metals is old news, and this has mostly been addressed by oil manufacturers, but it would still be wise to check labels and data sheets

As an update, I put in Providence 80w90 from Rural King. I was able to buy it in a 2 gallon jug for about $36. The transmission seems to be much happier with it than the 85w140…much easier to shift cold. Oddly enough, this is the cheapest oil that’s been in it and it seems to be performing the best it has with this oil. Part of that could be me learning exactly how to ask it to go in the next gear. It has the MT-1 rating which I don’t recall the other lubes having.

Yes indeed the 85w140 has only seemed to make cold shifting (first 10-15 minutes) a bit tougher over the Penn Grade gl4 80w90 but that’s whats in there right now so I may just leave it. With all the rave reviews on the MT90 I was not impressed with it in this trans…just seemed a little too thin for its liking.
In cold weather try putting the transfer case in neutral and put the transmission into gear and let it idle and when you leave the oil will be warmed up.

Ditch the heavyweight, use 80w90, change it after break-in, say 1k - 2k miles then just drive it. After 20k the trans starts to get real nice and smooth. Enjoy that you get to drive a really nice, brand new 5spd. 5th feels the weirdest for a while but it ultimately becomes very pleasant.
