Hey Everyone!
Been looking for a nice GX470 for several months now and finally pulled the trigger this last week!
She's a 2003, one-owner with 113,000 with every option except for towing package (easy fix). Prior to buying, did the car fax and it came back squeaky clean with great detail to maintenance. Previous owner had all major receipts as well.

As you could very well imagine I'm very excited. The only thing that needed maintenance was the timing belt (water pump replacement too).
I scheduled it and had it done yesterday and was excited to start enjoying my new ride for this weekend. Except...

When I drove off from the dealership, I heard a squeaking noise coming from the rear passenger quarter. I also could feel that the she wasn't the smooth ride that I had already grown to love. It was jumpy, bouncy and (right away) I got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach!
I returned back to the dealership and the mechanic immediately crawled underneath to take a look at it. I made sure to point out that it wasn't that way when I came in and he acknowledged that he should have checked it before dropping it back on the ground from the hoist.
He determined that the rear passenger suspension air bag was messed up. It was crooked, loose (not seated in the correct position) and deflated (unlike the driver's side).
He was a nice guy and was honest enough to take the blame while apologizing profusely. He immediately informed the parts manager to order a new part (not in stock) which should be coming in from LA on Thursday of next week.
It was near closing on Friday and the Service Manager had left already. He was adamant that he would inform him on Monday morning that it was his fault, guaranteeing me that there should be no problem.
Now here's my question which I've posted on some other sites as well: You guys are seasoned vets with this vehicle. I've so far driven the vehicle sparingly and very carefully (just twice since then) but now I'm paranoid to drive it anymore until it gets fixed.
Aside from the jerky and extremely uncomfortable drive, I'm afraid I'll mess something else up on the rear suspension if I drive it for a week (also has new front and rear shocks installed within the last 4 months).
Any insight from you guys? Advice?
Am I just being overly cautious or are things okay for now until the new bag gets installed?
Ultimately, I'd love to just get by with the bag fixed and do a lift and bypass the whole air suspension system. I am wondering how much of a sacrifice the luxury ride would suffer though.
Thanks!

As long as the bag is aligned properly it can be driven, it just wont ride nicely till it is fixed.

I, my brother (ObsessMuch) and several others have swapped to coils. I personally have noticed a firmer ride (I got heavy springs due to my offroading). With my aftermarket bumper and gear in the back it is a great ride. If you were to go to a stock or just over stock lift it won't be a huge sacrifice and it certainly will eliminate the possible airbag problem!

Nice GX. I have the same year :)

Thanks for the reply Dan.
It's definitely a rough ride. I'm just worried that I might mess up the rear OEM shocks (especially since they were installed new 5 months ago by the previous owner). I saw the parts/labor cost involved from the receipt he provided and thought it was highway robbery!
I am enjoying this forum quite a bit! What drew me to this site is that I definitely want to do the same thing as you and others have, which is make the leap to coils.
The air bags have been particularly frustrating because I bought my truck on Thursday, took it into the Toyota dealership on Friday (to do the timing belt/water pump) and haven't been able to enjoy it ever since. The new air bag doesn't come in from LA until Thursday.
The silver lining to this all is, it's allowed me to research the topic and realize that I never want to be sequestered like this again. I've learned that there's just too many expensive rear suspension components that can fail and the smart bet is to do the lift (for practical reasons and for great looks as well).
I'm limited in mechanical ability, tools and time so I'd find a local 4x4 shop to do the work. Could you or anyone else give me a slight nudge in the right direction as to which parts/components list I would need to purchase in order to do a good but affordable lift? My off-roading would be limited to hunting areas that are not super extreme.
Dan - I LOVE the ride height of your truck and... Yes, we do have the same year. It looks incredible!

I also like Overacheiver's ride height and his use of FJ wheels?

Disclaimer: I know there are plenty of others that are incredible also. These are just a couple of examples.

Click the link in my sig, I have all the ironman 4x4 parts listed.

I just converted mine over to coils (redflo OEM) and I can say that the ride is just slightly stiffer on the road at speed but nicer off road and in bumps especially with stuff in the back. Metaltech is working on / has a bolt on plate for the springs so its actually an easy conversion. The electronics is easy too...just unplug one computer and no more lights at all. Mine is about 3-4 inches higher than stock and I put 165/70/17 tires so the spare still fits under it. I had a 2003 - but I had to wreck that truck....so now I have a 2006 :)

That's awesome! It was one of my questions I asked on a different forum but hadn't gotten a reply back yet.
That's great Metaltech has the custom fabbed lower spring perches/ramps for the rear axle.
That's the part I didn't trust. I didn't want just anybody fabbing it because it seems way too crucial.

So is this a proper parts list?:
Front shocks
Front Springs ?
Rear Shocks
Rear Coils
Metaltech Lower Spring Spring Perch
Rear FJ Spring Cups

After parts (and then labor for a shop to install), how much is a ballpark of what it will cost me?
I'm pretty serious about making the switch.

That's because they're all here. That's why I posted the link to this forum for you to check out. :D

Okay. Been loving my truck!! Amazed at what several have done on this site too! Tons of ideas and information that I've been reading up on. Looking to go the route of the Radflos for a lift.
There's just one other particular area of interest that I can't find much on (except for one old comment from an entirely different site).
Mine is an 03' which doesn't have the nav screen back-up camera ability. I have found info that indicates that I should be able to a use later year OEM harness, OEM camera (or a newer one) in order to accomplish this..
However, I have not found anyone that has actually done it or that has any kind of informative write-up (or information other helpful information concerning this).
Have any of you 03' guys worked around this problem and found a solution on order to use the nav screen as your back-up camera screen?
