I just got a new fj60. I have already had a tune up, all fluids changed, and front axle rebuilt. What customizations would you recommend for starting off? Im mainly mud, but also some light off roading. I would also like to keep it as cheap as possible, but am willing to spend what it takes to make my truck look amazing.

I think it kinda depends on what you want to do and what you want it to look like.

I would start out by doing a ilft, tires, and the (front) bumper, which are kind of standards.

You can also look for and post pics of the rigs you like and we can tell you what it has on them or something, too.

ANYWAY, congrats (again) and welcome aboard!

Welcome to mud :flipoff2:

I would suggest tires (if needed) and protection (bumpers, sliders) to start. But the best advice is to get out and do the kind of wheeling you do, and address the deficiencies as they come up. It is amazing what they will do stock. Extending the breathers on the diffs and transfer would be a good idea too.

You know what would look super AMAZING?!?! Pink Flowers, a Yellow sunshine on a light purple base color. Also, you should paint a rainbow on it. It would probably be a good idea to put in a PS3, DVD player and some 15" sub-woofers. You definately wana pimp in style at the movie theater on Friday nights.

Welcome to MUD noob :flipoff2:

P.S. - Wait till you can legally drive before you put any money into it. Save your coin and spend once...

what size tires could i go up to without lifting the truck?

Debated to death if you search. Here is a thread where people have shared what they are running (regardless of lift or not).
As long as your springs aren't toast, you should be good up to 33x10.5, others with first hand experience may up that to larger sizes. I've run 33x12.5 on mine with minimal rubbing, but I have 2-3" lift.

alright thanks. i was thinking of starting off with some 32x10.5x15 BFG MTs, so now i know that definately doable, also a step up from my 30x9.5x15 BFG ATs. thanks for the help

If you have stock rims... the bfgoodies come in a 33 x 9.5 x 15 that look really good on the stock rim.
Spring over lift (soa) is a cheap way for a lift too. i also agree that a front bumber will change the look of any cruiser.

FSM first and formost, and mud of course.:D
Welcome:flipoff2:

Get the factory service manual (FSM)

If you plan on seeing any rocks whatsoever you should get rock sliders. Front and rear bumpers are luxuries and can slowly be built or accumulated.

Keep it well maintained! A stock rig that runs well can get you a lot of places.

alright thanks. Noob question, but I have the orange manual that cane with the cruiser. Is that the FSM or should I have to go get something else?

No, the manual you have is the basic information. You need the big book that covers all the wring diagrams and how to trouble shoot your systems. The FSM takes you step by step on how to diagnos systems, disassemble componnets, and how to reassemble them. The diagrams also show which parts need to be replaced everytime (i.e. gaskets, orings, and seals.)

You now own a 20+ year old truck, things will go wrong and an FSM will tell you what goes wrong without guessing and installing extra parts. It will save you money the first time you use it. Couple the FSM with mud and you're golden.

Welcome to Mud! :flipoff2:

The FSM will look similar to this. You can search the Mud classifieds or EBay for one.

Stay away from the Chiltons and Haynes manuals. They're not worth the paper they're printed on!

Correct. Well put dude...

TOME, when do you get your driver's liscense?

I have a hardship license right now, but i get my normal license in april. but i still go mudding when it rains and am going off roading over thanksgiving holidays, so my truck already sees off road use.
