JLH- Dirk will supply everything. Don't know about the chrome locking strip as I junked mine, but he'll reuse if yours are in good shape. He's a good guy, give him a call.

JMC - Before I replaced my windshield, I also used that clear permatex windshield sealant, applying it as you did and where you did, and it cured the leak into the driver's floor. Not as good as doing it right the 1st time, but ...

Great write up Thanks, I'm in Ventura and will be doing the same using your guy Dirk. Correction on his phone number. The number you posted seems to be a fax. His number to the shop is: 818-786-7841. Thanks again for the detailed write up!!

Fixed.

And it would be worth the drive. You can walk the block over to Van Nuys Blvd and have breakfast/lunch or cruise the porn shop while you wait. ::grinpimp:

Ranch House BBQ is pretty good. :)

I just received my Precision weatherstrip (WBL F425) for the very good and very reasonable price of 75$ (+ tx) from PH Vitre d'auto (www.ph.ca).

I think it is relevant to share this information that could help Cruiserhead of Québec and Canada.

Wow. Major information here. I'm getting ready to do my front windshield next week and the installer is a grizzled old salt that's been doing the job for 30 years. I've got the gasket and adhesive ready to go.

Got the OEM gasket and spare chrome just in case. On my list to do in the next year. I know I've got some rust under the old gasket but no leakage yet. My body man has a glass man and I'll make them both read this entire thread before starting. I'll call Dirk.

I tried looking for an aftermarket windshield with the tint towards the top and could no longer find one. Sucks.

If you read the FSM carefully it only has the sealant mentioned under the "Canada" section for the trucks that got OE-non-lock strip gasket. In the first section on the US style windshields no sealant is used.

The FSM only describes sealant for the installation of non-US style gaskets (General and Canada) that have no mechanical lock strips. The sealant is not used or listed in the FSM for lock strip style gaskets.

I looked at my Trollhole FSM and in the USA section and it does show both sides of the seal getting urethane, but no lock strip is mentioned. Personally, I believe that was just an oversight on the author's part, as the chrome strips are shown in the first illustration (for both US and Canada sections) there it shows all of the components.

But, that's not why I bumped this thread. I just had my factory original windshield cut out and after looking at the old lock strip seal, I can confirm that it had urethane on both sides.

I found one at a local shop in Azusa a year or so ago.

Had a new Toyota OEM windshield and all OEM Gaskets used in my 86 FJ60 on Monday...it was insurance as it had a crack in it and terrible pitting and scratches from 30 years of use. In SC if it is not repairable or the crack is more than 2 inches they replace....

They usually do aftermarket glass and gaskets...and my insurance uses Safelite which I have always had good luck. I wanted the local Toyota dealership to do it as they confirmed glass was in stock. But they refused as they had nobody qualified with the old Land Cruisers. The guy that used to run their service dept now works for a buddy that has his own Lexus-Toyota shop in town. LOL

Anyhow...had to get special permission to use all OEM and justify why I wanted it...so went with the 30 year old classic vehicle and they wanted pictures to see if it was rusted or in good shape. It was hundreds of dollars more for the OEM than aftermarket but they ended up approving it.

Safelite then refused to do the install and said they had nobody that could do it properly and recommended someone else. GlassPro had a guy that had been doing windows for 30 years and he is their Master Technician here in town.....and said he could do it but wanted to see the window frame and A-Pillars so sent pictures to see if it would suffice.

He went over parts list and had to order some extra pieces and then said he would want to do it in his shop instead of on site to make sure it was done right.

Dropped it off Sunday night and picked it up Monday afternoon. Looks great.

He said he checked pinch weld and windshield area and no rust at all...one little spot of surface on lower left corner so he wire brushed it and primed and made sure it was all clean and sealed up.

Must say they were pleasure to work with. Amazing how much difference a nice clean and clear windshield will make.

Hopefully this fixes the leaks on floorboards I had on driver and passenger side that looked like coming from lower corners since was original gasket and windshield. Should rain this weekend....fingers crossed.

I wanted to try everything possible to get another full OEM install done in hopes it would last another 30 years. The aftermarket meet all requirements but they are thinner usually and lighter by fact of that.... went aftermarket on my LX470 and that was as big a pain in ass as the FJ60 with the rivets used to permanently hold windshield in place even if gasket seal trim pops out. haha

Great thread.

They went to Toyota Dealership and they looked it up in the worldwide inventory and had it shipped locally for installation. They are still available. If all else fails call them at Charleston Toyota Dealer | Serves Mt Pleasant, Goose Creek, Summerville | Fred Anderson Toyota of Charleston

Another great source for hard to find parts is Jamie Sutherland at Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach...he does a lot of overseas parts shipments both ways. http://www.sparkstoyota.com/service-center-PartsPage.html

Rock Auto carries the aftermarket seal, too.

@zaboon - if you're in L.A. just call or go to Dirk's (Van Nuys) He'll find one for you. SOR has OE windshields for 60-series in stock, as well as aftermarket, but they won't ship.

Just replaced the OEM windshield and the OEM gasket (with locking strip/trim groove) by a glass/windshield business and they only used the black Sika type sealant on the body before putting in the windshield/gasket. I asked about a sealant between the gasket and the glass and the sealant between the gasket and the body and they claim it is not required for this vintage vehicle.

I'd like to seal the bottom two corners at least myself, between the gasket and the glass, the water likes to pool up there as is seen in post #91 by @Brock above.
FSM says to use it on the #1 lip between the gasket and the body and the glass lip, which is between the glass and the gasket.

Question is, what kind of tools and sealant should I use?

I'm thinking CRL 7708 and some non-marring wedges. Anyone use this?

I'm at All Star Glass in LA getting windshield replaced now! Have the OEM gasket and going aftermarket glass. I teallr don't want to lose the chrome trim but the plastic underneath the trim has fallen away and is super britleb. The guy is saying it would have been bonded to the chrome trim originally and is refusing to try and put it back on! Need advice quick, do I need the plastic seal under the chrome trim? Can it be replaced or am I screwed?

There was another thread in the past few days about someone using a GM product that is what you are describing - plastic with chrome mylar covering it. Some of the experts may correct me, however, I believe that OEM was all metal lock strip. I am guessing that a PO replaced the metal with the GM lock strip.

Here is a link to the thread
