Hi All, I just bought a 1985 land cruiser for $2k. 150K miles, NO rust, 4 speed, and good overall condition. Anything I should know about these babies? Anything to avoid? General weaknesses, etc?

All advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Where are you located and where are the pics?

It was originally a CA car and last passed CA emissions in late 86. I have high hopes, lol.

Looks really clean for $2K! Welcome to the 60 series forum.

I know the seller. A real standup guy. He kept it at his property in MT but sine he's selling the property doesn't need the FJ anymore.

The next 10 days are gonna be hell. I hate waiting. :steer:

Nice find.

Now how's your bank account?

Good luck and read up! FSM is your friend.

Oh well, another great 60 leaving Montana! Glad it is going to someone who appreciates it.

That's pretty funny since it spent all but the last year and a half in California.

Did I mention that the wait is killing me? :frown:

Yes, avoid selling it, and no...no weaknesses come to mind.......beautiful rig for 2k I paid 4 and yours is prettier, but mine has 0 rust and 140k:clap:

Sounds like you got a deal too. Around here there seems to be a premium attached. heck, the least expensive I saw recently was selling for $3000, had the ubiquitous rust around the wheel wells, etc, oh, and it had 250K+ miles.

I got this hankering to drive it until next year then have it converted to diesel.

Is it me or do the rear spings look like they might need replacing?

Weaknesses - :hhmm:

Rust on the body and Frame

Steering Knuckles usually lose their axle seal after a while and gear oil from the inside runs into the Moly grease in the knuckle.

Leaf springs sag in the back

Rear Main Seal can get leaky

Emissions System is a Huge PITA especially the air pump,

That's about all i can think of, and all those are fixable, even the rust.

I just got back from Montana. I flew to Bozeman this morning and got back to Denver around midnight. 710 miles. The FJ made it just fine. I was surprised as heck that I averaged 17 MPG. I was fearing the worst. I averaged about 65 mph. I'm bushed.

What size tires (larger of course) can you run with the OEM suspension without any problems?
