I posted this in the 150 forum as well - but wanted to post here to see if anyone has some advice for a newbie...

I own a 2011 GX460 Base and am considering adding a Dobinson 2" lift that Treaty Oak Offroad has on sale right now. I also found someone locally selling a set of 18" Fuel Beast wheels with 285/65R18 Nitto mud tires with around 2000 miles on them for $1900.

Wondering if anyone can provide some feedback on whether or not these would be a good match and what I need to consider for fitment?

I do mostly road driving now and occasional service road drives - so I understand the mud tires are going to be noisier, etc.

My other option is to get some FN Wheels or a set of OEM FSport wheels with Toyo Open Country AT tires. Thoughts compared to the Nitto mud tires?

Finally, if anyone is running the Dobinson lift, did you install a diff kit as well (looking at the 1" kit from Metal Tech). Is this necessary/a good choice to reduce overall wear?

Any feedback/advice greatly appreciated.
 
@jclarke450 might have some input. He added some tire and changed a few things on his GX 470. Seems like we have another GX in the club but i can’t place the name. @murf or @medtro can either of you remember.

I remember seeing a guy in Flagstaff that modded his GX extensively but probably more than you are interest in. I recall him being more active on Expedition Portal.
 
@medtro - that's an impressive list based on memory alone, I couldn't tell you what I ate for dinner two nights ago :)

@esper - my '08 GX470 (see my signature for specs) - I can't comment specifically on the Dobinson's or Nittos you're asking about but if you're truly not doing a lot of offroading/rock climbing, why even spend the $$ for a lift? Might be worthwhile just going with some more aggressive off road tires and see how that fares, you'll be surprised how much climbing you can do without a lift (ditch the stock running boards for some sliders). There's always next year's Black Friday sales if you find you do need a lift and service roads won't present a challenge at all....(my apologies for not really answering your question, this is all possibly a waste of your time).

BTW, my KM2's (mud tires) make a lot less noise on the road than I expected. Had the same type of tire on my FJ80 and liked them, hence getting them again for my GX. Good luck!
 
Thanks for the feedback! I think I am going to stick with the 2" lift and try to get some 33" tires - researching 18" and 17" rim options with either the Nitto Terra Grapplers or Toyo Open Country AT II's... SO many options and little things to consider for fitment and functionality! My priorities are adding a bit more clearance (some of the service roads I know I will be driving make this desirable) and a more balanced tire for both an and off road use. Beyond that, the wheels are purely cosmetic. I may stick with the stock rims and just do the lift and new tires.
 
the toyo ATII tires are just as loud as any mud terrain. they performed great on and off road, but did make a bunch of noise over 50 mph.

I'm running nitto ridge grapplers now. they are nearly silent. amazing performance, been through moab, Colorado, and Az trails and held up very well.
 
Agh! Now you have me second-guessing...hahaha. Can get a set of like new 285/65R18 Ridge Grapplers on Fuel Beast 18" x 8" deep rims for $1900 locally, but don't think they will clear without a larger lift (3"). How can I determine what will fit?!?
 
What size tires are you using? Am I going to be able to go to something like a 275/65R18 or 285/65R18? Any advantage to going down to a 17" rim? Lower tire costs for that size? Better fit? More tire adjustment for off-road use??? SOOO many questions.
 
$2k for a newish set of tires and wheels is not something I would spend money on, you can get bigger tires for $800-$1000 new. I know when we get the fever we don’t always make the most practical decisions. Sliders, tires, awning, fridge all sound like things you would get more use out of, at least I do. Removing the steps will make it look lifted.
Do you have any other mods completed?

Check out “gxor” if you’re on Facebook as there’s a lot of GX460 inspiration there. I have an 04 GX470 so no experience with the 460 to comment. I will say I’ve used Old Man Emu on my 60, 80, and 100 series so went with it on my 120 too. I’m sure Dobinson’s is great but you can’t go wrong with OME in my opinion. Good luck!

Hey sorry, our 13gx is still stock lift-wise. Just bought wheels and tires so far. I wasn't ready to add a rear bumper so I will be running stock tire size until then because nothing bigger can fit in the spare spot.
