So its time for a new exhaust, I stuck my head under the truck and found the exhaust leaking in two places. I have decided to get my local S/S exhaust shop to fabricate me a catback system due to it being cheaper than oem and having a lifetime warranty, but my dilema is that they asked me what sound I want, my plan was to have it the same as OEM, which is quiet, but it is so tempting to let the V8 roar abit, my question is, would a louder exhaust note get annoying.

I am from the UK where v8's are rare, so I have always wanted vehicle with a large v8, which now I own, but you can't hear it, if it wasn't for the badge then I wouldn't even know that it was a V8, but I do think the quiet ride suits the LC. Why did he have to ask what sound I want....Roaarrr or ffffff

If your driving is limited to on the road, and you drive gently through residential areas - then go for some growl. But if you think about being on a holiday, what you may find nice may seem quite inconsiderate by the flora, fauna and holiday neighbors.

Shouldn't be too hard to have some of both. What you don't want is drone at cruising speeds. I had an e39 M5 with a muffler delete that sounded nasty on the throttle but very quiet at speed because of the way the exhaust was designed. If I had a V8 in my cruiser I'd let it out for sure. :)

To be honest, a drone when cruising is all I am trying to avoid, If they can design a system that cruises quietly but sounds more aggresive the rest of the time that would be perfect, I didn't know if that is possible.

Thanks for the video, nice sound.

I've had loud cars and bikes (motorcycles for some of you). I prefer quiet both on and off road.

Loud is fun every now and then, but has always gotten old day in and out. I never get tired of quiet...

Loud for toys (MAYbe). Quiet for everything else.

I always find myself a little shy about being loud. Which is a bummer because my sports car is a bit loud even though I bought an exhaust that is on the quieter end of the scale FOR MODIFIED exhausts. I drive it slower more often because I don't like to be noisy. If it was quieter I think I would have more fun in it.

As a 35 year old, I bought the LX as my first "adult" car. I want to be able to transport anyone in absolute serenity and comfort without a second thought and in keeping with the badge on the truck.

As a side, hearing the Borla I was immediately thinking both, "Oh, hell no." and "That sounds killer."

Do what you want man. Go with your feeling :-)

Loud is not the same thing as a bit of a rumble. Most of the noise from that Borla clip is from the K&N intake, not the exhaust. Plus, how often do you floor it in a Land Cruiser? I drive mine low and slow. :)

My TR4a had a nice rumble but wasn't loud around town or at high speeds (in excess of 100). Hard to find exhaust systems like that.

Im going to ask if they can can make it abit more audible on acceleration and idle but quiet whilst cruising. I think it will be abit of trial and error on this to get it right.

The under carrage has been rust proofed using dinitrol, we do suffer with rust in the UK but there is no real sign of it, everything just looks black. The exhaust is leaking at the hanger points on the welds, maybe 18 years of vibrating takes it toll.

I don't really want to put money into the old exhaust as they wear from the inside out, so not sure what state it is in for sure. It depends what grade stainless steel toyota used that determines there life expectancy, after 18 yrs the mufflers can't be at there best either.

I had Pacemaker headers and a high flow 3" SS exhaust on my previous 100 and it took several trips back to the exhaust place to get it to not drone. They had asked me the same question and I asked for quiet but they had a different idea of what is quiet. On my current 100 when the main silencer fell apart I replaced it with a Magnaflow universal silencer (12580) and left everything else standard and it has a nice V8 note but isn't at all intrusive.

For a DD I would want quiet. It's tempting to get a nice growl, but when cruising you'll suffer. I can't imagine what it would cost to have a selector like on expensive GT cars, but my guess is not worth it for a Hundy.

This is interesting. Mine had the Borla installed when I bought it, so I've never really heard the stock one. For anyone that's considering it, the Borla really is pretty mild. No droning at all that I've ever noticed. I wouldn't mind a bit more growl if it could be done without droning.
