New drivetrain for my 62

I'd like to start it as soon as my current truck is totally squared way (IE highway capable with the 5-speed).

Then start building the other truck, and when it's driving take the red truck of the road to repair all the rust and 3-link/SOA rear.

But that's the future! This is now.
Now nice chunk of change said "See Ya!" to my wallet, back to saving up for the doubler. Luckily it still hasn't been removed from the donor truck and the current owner understands the delay.

It's a shame this is a Florida rig...

Ordered Advance Adapter kit 712550 from Summit, free shipping!

This allows me to bolt the NV4500 to the Land Cruiser three-speed 1F bellhousing

And picked up a 1996 NV4500, Chevy version, which means I'll have to swap the input shaft to the Dodge version. And I need a shifter. I got this cheap enough that I'm not concerned too much about those things.

This has a 32 spline output which means I'll need to convert my 203 Doubler to 32 spline from 23, something I'm not too unhappy with. More splines = stronger right?

Also will be using the Dodge tailhousing which is 1.875" shorter, meaning I can use factory FJ62 driveshafts that I have on the shelf. And the longer GM output shaft with the short her Dodge tailhousing should give me really good spline engagement between the two units, the only thing I haven't been able to find out is how deep the input on the 203 is, worst case I have to lob off a bit of the output from the transmission.

Purchase list:

Shift tower
Dodge input shaft
Dodge tailhousing
32-spline 203 input
Splitcase rebuild kit

Now if you go diesel, that can change options.

Diesel Tim kit GaBiodiesel - BioDiesel processor kits and instructional videos Need Isuzu flywheel, bell housing and linkage and still have to get a Dodge input shaft

and other kits that make it look like the back of a Chevy. Not sure who's all making them now (Almares?, IDS?). Use a Chevy NV4500 bell housing, keep the Chevy input shaft. But have to send back your AA adapter:(

In 1984/1985 the factory Isuzu trucks with auto transmission (turbo400 before they used Aisin) came with adapter rings that were Chevy pattern. They are rare though.

I'm confusing..... I want to go diesel in my other project truck. RED 62 will be 3FE powered forever, or until lack of parts support outpaces my ability to custom make stuff. If this motor lasts 100K miles (it has about 3K on it now I think) it will last me my whole life.

I listed that NV4500 for sale on Pirate, as soon as I decide it might be better to keep it a bunch of people are interested

If it sells I'll buy a Dodge version and that means I don't have to convert my 203 to 32 spline (A little bummed but I'm not really worried about strength here, plus the extra $150 is nice), and I won't have to buy an input shaft (Also nice).

Building a new transmission from scratch... Main case, tailhousing, input shaft, front retainer, and mainshaft all ordered, all OEM New Venture. Reusing the gears and syncros from my current transmission.

Nice job Matt!

Two major snags I've had over the past couple weeks.

There's a 3/16" roll pin that holds the reverse gear shift fork to the linkage, that needs to be driven out. I used my 3/16" punch and drove out the pin but the punch got stuck, the head of it mushroomed put. Could not pull it out with vice grips, here's what I did:

Cut a bolt and welded it to the punch

Welded two nuts together

View attachment 1201081

Threaded the slide hammer in

View attachment 1201082

Success

The other major hang-up is removing the 5th gear is being a major pain in the ass. I've broken two pullers so far :bang:

It's mostly online shopping and planning, only really getting about a half hour or two once a week on this.

Between the Nv4500 and split-case in the picture is my 203 and adapter... Now I just need to pay for it :)
