I was looking at a few of them, and intially I thought AN Hosting would be good, but "host monster" or "hostgater" seem to be good fits.

One thing to note, the prices of "4.95" a month may be if you pay for multiple years in advance. I think we need to narrow it down to a few, and find out how much the group would like to "prepay." to find the best deal.

Looking at the potential web hosts, It appears to me that I should set up some kind of matrix with features. This is what I have so far - I'm thinking of using a threshold of 5000 GB bandwidth and 500 GB storage. Is that acceptable?

Here's what I have, as a first shot (from the hip, or maybe not even out of the holster...):

Cost
Streaming Audio
Streaming Video
Domains
Subdomains (?)
Disk Space
Bandwidth
Interface
Contract Term
Support
Email Accounts
Email Forwarding
Pop Email

I'm not sure that email is important, except that I have found it beneficial to have a stand alone email address that I can forward - that way I'm not locked into an ISP. I'm thinking this webhosting would be a no-cost long term benefit to HDC membership.

I checked around and found three sites that rank web hosting services. There are so many variables that the matrix I listed above would be enormous. So, here are the results of the rankings. Some of the costs and sizes vary a little depending on reference.

I read some more up on it last night, and was talking to my brother-in-law about it as well. Hostmonster seems to be a good candidate. It has a common "control panel," great pricing, and a good back network (dual dns if i recall).

600 G, and 6000 is far more than we will use. It also has unlimited "ftp accts", so that everyone could have their own area.

Steve,
Decent Linux CPanel. I couldn't get Web disk working on their demo. Do you use that feature? Does it work OK for you? Do you think that would be an alternative that would enable us to have a service where HDC members could upload GPS tracks, images, and files?

I have not used the wed disk yet but I'll look into it!

Here is the update:

I read some reviews from various sites, and decided to go with hostgater. They appear to be one of the more reliable "cheap" hosts. We will be the "baby" setup, which includes 600gb of storage, and 6 tb of bandwidth a month. There was no setup fee, if paid by the year, plus they had a special with 20% new orders. The total for the year came to a whopping $95.52.

We also did not have to sign any long term agreement, so after the year, if we are unhappy with the service, we can move to a month-to-month until we move to another service.

I have the account already, with a username (cruiser), can start posting already. I can begin migrating the current host to the new service If I am provided the login/password, and where to get the current data files.

Also, we will have to submit the DNS changes to the current provider. I'm pretty sure i'll need to contact Dave to assist in this. If anyone has his contact information, please send it my way, or give him my information.

By the end of the weekend, I can start creating individual ftp user accounts for everyone. I was thinking we could stick with the same user names we are using here (unless someone really wants something different). Also, I was figuring we could start with 10gb of space for each user initially.

I recommend anyone who is planning on posting items on the site read the Terms of Service. If anyone breaks the rules, we all lose out. Most of it is pretty basic, no copyrighted material, no pirated software, no spamming, etc.

Thanks Ron! We appreciate your efforts.

The website is now up and running on the new host. Please take a moment and glance around to make sure everything was working as it was before.

I could have done it without Dave's help. THanks for the help.

We are ready to start creating everyone a login to place files/web pages, etc. Instead of mass-creating everyone's login, please just pm me/email me with the login you would like, and i'll create it them on an ad-requested basis. I am currently using the windows ftp client "FileZilla." After 10 minutes of usage, I would recommend it to the novice's out there. It's free, and simple enough to use. I'll even start creating a simple document on how to login, and manage each personal space.

Also, Dave is offering to transfer the "domain" to me, or someone else. How would the collective like to do this?

Ron

I think transferring the domain to you, Ron, is fine.

UGH! We have moved lock, stock, and barrel. Ron, PM me an email address. I just worked on the Events page and couldn't get 'er uploaded. I'll send it to you.

Nice job Ron. Way to get it done nicely.

And, yes, I think it is fine that the domain name be in your name....

Cheers.

I agree with Onur - thanks for your help with this, Ron.

Also fine to keep the domain name in your name.
