Well, my FJ60 did not pass smog today. The SMOG tech told me that the other area test passed fine, but that I had a high HC (PPM) reading therefore not allowing it to pass. He said that more than likely it was my CAT. I have recently done a tuneup on my rig and had carburetor work done, so I think that the diagnosis was a legitimate one. Does anyone know where i can get a good reliable aftermarket CAT from? :wrench:

me? i have one with the flanges and stuff already welded on, but no sensor bung... lemme check to make sure i still have it first:rolleyes:

I replaced mine last year with a catco direct fit converter and was very pleased.Bolted right up
The less expensive ones don't have a bung for the o2 sensor I beleive.
I ran a search on catalytic converters and decided from there to go with the catco unit per others opinions.

Please post up all your test numbers. The CAT won't work without oxygen, and therefore the AI system needs to be working too. If you have high HC with some measurable oxygen left at the tail pipe, then it could be your CAT. If your measurable oxygen is zero or very low, then your AI system may not be working properly or your carburetor is running too rich.

I purchased a "direct fit" CAT from an online vendor (discountconverter.com, I think). It had the port for the thermosensor. I just had to cut the port a little shorter, put the thermosensor flange on from the old cat and flare the end of the sensor port. It was pretty straigtforward using a small tubing cutter and flare tool...

Thanks for the help guys!

I appreciate all the responses. I will try and post my reading from my test up later today. :D

Inspection

I failed miserably the first time...Weber/Headers

Idle limits were something like 220 PPM for N02....I got about 2200 PPM

I don't think that the shop even did the two speed idle correctly.

After asking around, I found a 'friendlier' shop....Then I went home and hammered out my Cat - now my exhaust sounds good, and I can make all of the hippieds cough as well.

I know that if I did not get the truck a sticker within the 30 day period of the initial failure, I would have had my registration and license revoked. How does that process work were your from?

Thanks for the advice. Here in Cali, they will not issue the sticker until the vehicle is smoged. I have been running since last spring w/o the sticker. As long as it is registered and your not breaking the law, they pretty much leave you be.
