Dear Members.

I am the proud new owner of a 1995 HDj81, I live in Kenya and Uganda and this car is king of the road in these parts. It took me about 20 minutes to decide whether to buy the beast. I have had the car for about a month now. Im really enjoying it, done lots of k's already, on and offroad. Im very impressed at the power and the ability in the varied terrain. I used to drive a golf GTI 85, great car too but th VX gives me a whole new angle on things,:).
So, having bought and driven the beast i started reading up on this first class website.
I have the manual 4.2 turbo, my question comes now, regarding the high/low stick. The options on the stick are either high or low, but no diff lock, i understand there is a switch that can be fitted on the dash to give total lockage all round. I read in some earlier posts that all 80 and 81's have the wiring and its merely a matter of installing the switch. If anyone has some information on this please let me know.
Thanks alot.

Welcome

Just below the announcements, there is a thread titled FAQ for 80/LX450 series. There are several writeups there on diff locks in the modification section. Boston Mangler has an entire write-up and install lockers into an open diff.

Karibu!

There are three differentials on the 80/81. Centre front and rear. All 80s/81s are equipped/wired for centre diff lock but only the trucks fitted with the correct hardware for front and rear diff locks will have the wiring for them.

Here's the basics on the three differentials and how they work together:

And here is how to modify your existing centre diff lock to work in either high or low range:

Welcome! Do you have pics of the beast in its natural habitat? (among lions, elephants and zebus...)

Hi all

Thanks for the info gentlemen.
I have read and read and read and now i understand all about diff lockers. I have no switches for any diff, when I engage low on the L/H stick I have an indicator light that shows the centre diff is locked. At this point i'll leave well alone since fitting advanced locking systems here in kenya is bound to end in tears and probably lots of those iron filings all over the place. I got a couple of pictures if you wanna see my rig, its in the game park, kinda hard to get out and take pics of the machine amoung the animals just in case im eaten. My trip home in the evening after work takes me through the park, instead of the horrendous traffic jams, i have a year pass so it doesnt cost me much. Saw a lion last night and took a picture.
Im trying to attach it but i know not how :( i need some sound advice on that too, oh yeah, how do i put pictures on my profile?
Thanks again for your kind advice.

Awesome!!! Welcome to the addiction!:flipoff2:

Cool!

Not many of us have to worry about being eaten during our evening commute!

Yeah, people only have to worry about being eaten by me. Or at least losing an arm if they reach in front of me while I'm eating.
Welcome to the forum, and that is one nice looking rig!
