Hello, I am a new owner of a 1996 Land Cruiser. I am curious what this box on the firewall is? I think it may be an aftermarket alarm system, but the car came with no alarm fob, no instructions. The car runs great but I am planning to remove this, bad idea?

Looks like you are right, aftermarket electronics. What is it connected to? Cannot see in the picture if it goes through the firewall or not.

Lettering or numbers on the box?
Is that a push button or lamp on the front of the box?
Any small lamp or switch on the left dash or left kick panel?
Any out-of-place small box under the driver's seat or mounted inside the cabin on the firewall by the steering column?

What happens (*or stops happening) when you push the button? Enquiring minds,...

UPDATE:

I took the box off the firewall and confirmed that this an anti theft device. I searched online and found a phone number and talked to the guy who knows all about it. This security system used a "secret circuit" to allow the car to start. When you push the button on firewall to activate would require a second action inside the car to start. This was typically turning on the high beam headlights or a specific turn signal. At that point the system would allow current to the starter solenoid. I plan to deactivate / remove the system soon, but for anyone in the future who comes across one of these here is what he advised:

Black wire - Ground
Grey wire - Horn
Blue wire - Trigger circuit (normally headlights or turn signal but could be others
Brown wire - to starter solenoid
Green wire - ignition switch

Essentially I just need to remove everything and make sure I solder or securely (weather tight) splice the gap in the starter circuit again).

I am looking to make my 80 as reliable as possible, so this is coming out as it seems like one more thing to go wrong.

Thanks!
