Just want to introduce my new Cruiser as it’s a little different from what you get in the States. I’m living in Shenzhen China (near Hong Kong) and was actually looking for a cheap new small car like a Corolla as a family vehicle when I spotted an old 80 at the end of the lot. I stood there staring at it and thought what a great truck….I wonder if these old Cruisers are any good? I got online…promptly found y’all…and discovered that yeah…these old Cruisers are not so bad :).

1993 FZJ80 GX

1FZ-F engine with carburator
H151F manual transmission - HF1A part time 2wd transfer case
K295 axle set: limited slip rear differential
Mile Marker Supreme Manual Locking Front Hubs

Suspension/Wheels:
Tough Dog Heavy Duty foam cell shocks
Lovells springs (80mm lift?), torsion rods, castor correction plates, etc.
Rancho steering dampener
Bradley V wheels and one SSR Speedstar Auswuch wheel (spare) all JWL
Cooper Discoverer ATR 305/75 16 tires

Other stuff:
Rear barn doors and integrated factory tire carrier
TJM front bumper
Factory sub tank

Interior is standard GX package:
Cloth seats
NO third row seats (or latches for attachment)
Single bench second row seats
Manual climate controls
Sunroof
Central console with fridge (fits a six pack perfect…genius)
Overhead console with sub tank gauge and altimeter

NEED TO DO:
Paint wheels black
Baseline all fluids/belts.
Trouble shoot rough idle.

Tough Dogs are too stiff for DD…looking for a mushy cheap shock replacement…maybe ProComp 9000’s?

Anybody with the HF1A T-Case know if it has locking center differential? I saw another guy from S. America ask the same question a while back but no answer.

It will be 70% DD urban assault vehicle (navigating broken concrete freeways and driving over traffic control barriers), 20% weekend adventure vehicle (seeking out good surf spots up and down the coast) and 10% expedition truck (now planning a cross-Himalaya trip next Fall from Shenzhen to Lhasa Tibet and down the other side to Chengdu... )

Nice, that is a pretty sweet looking 80. Very interesting packaging, manual, partial poverty with the bench 2nd row but has the ice box in the front. Love it.

Welcome. Yes, the older cruisers are very good. Mike

there is no center diff in the part time HF1A t-case .. just H4 button on the dash or 4H lever that move the fork that engages your front DS .. and that's it.

Nice find indeed, and much more useful than a Corolla! As noted, most of us are jealous of the 5 speed + Part-time setup in your rig. Expat assignment?

Steve

I'm really jealous...

really nice rig, Welcome

Crazy jealous as well. As to the idle, did you make a large elevation change after buying it? If so, it may take a couple run cycles to "re-learn" the new elevation. If not, you may have a vacuum leak. I would say it also could be a crack in the air tube between air sensor and intake plenum but its normally aspirated so it's not that...so look for cracked vacuum lines to the carb.

EDIT: Nevermind on the computer aspect, that would be for Fuel injection as well, I believe...duh

Welcome!! Sweet rig! First LHD I have seen with a fridge console.
Interested to follow your travels over there.

Nice cruiser! Welcome.

I hope the 5 speed doesn't kill your left foot in Chinese traffic. :D

Well...I thought the five speed would be great as well...but yes its a hassle to drive around town:crybaby: I'm wishing I had held out for an auto but they are nearly impossible to find here. I've seen a few imported from the middle east but they were not for sale. That said the manual is makes the truck pretty quick (for an 80) and maybe better MPG? So far I calculate about 16mpg highway 12mpg around town. Anyway you guys should should all enjoy your autos.

Some GX's have the center console...some have bench seats...but I've never seen another GX with a sunroof which I know y'all complain about, but here in the tropics its nice to open it up for ventilation and get the air moving. I also which I had the factory roof rack! Its low profile and would be perfect for strapping surfboards the the roof. If I put on anything taller I wont fit in the local parking garages.

Because of the carb there is no EGR system, no computer, no 02 sensors, no PHH! There are a few vacuum lines that I'll replace ASAP and see if that helps. Maybe just clean the carb?

Just picked up all the stuff for a tuneup including Toyota oil?! The factory parts seem to be about half the price listed on the Toyota DIY site and what I've heard mentioned here.

Is labor here that is crazy cheap. The local mechanic charged me 20 bucks to change the all the fluids and change the belts. I'm jealous you guys have the space and tools to do your own work. I don't think I trust these guys with much more than the oil change. I asked them about the rough idle and their comment was 'yeah its old. they all do that'

Going to go figure out how to get that star...
