New 21' cruise control function shifting

Hi there,
Just bought a new series 200 to keep the old fj62 company. Love the truck so far, very smooth and tight.
Only question, the cruise control on hills at speeds around 60 it seems to shift a lot almost like its hunting for the right gear. Any others feel this?

Yes. Toyota cruise control programming on hills is pathetic. Normal.

I didn’t get the same feeling in the ‘21 LX 570. Used it a lot on highways going uphill and downhill. Assuming they use the same underlying tech.

It worked fine at interstate speeds, it was at lower speeds it seemed to jump around.

Yep....my Tundra with same engine and 6 speed auto was perfect everywhere on CC, but the 21' LC is "interesting" in programming. On 55 mph roads with decent hills it is just a joke....shifts like a drunk toddler. Its almost comical and the massive downshifts going down a hill make my wife look over at me and give me that WTF are you doing look.
On highway speeds it still hunts more than I'd like on hills, but at least it is just going through a couple gears and not hunting between 4th through 8th like on hilly country roads at 55 mph.

One easy way to "fix" it is to put the trans over to the left in "sport" mode and set your top gear to 5th or 6th when trying to use CC on hilly slower roads.

100% normal. MY 16 LC was very annoying when you set the cruise at 60 or so. Often times it will downshift 2 gears on a down hill to slow down. The LX seems slightly better, but still huts. For this reason, i dont use it unless i'm doing over 70 mph or on perfectly flat roads. My 15 tundra and current GS350 with the 6 speeds are perfect. Just another annoyance of having more gears.

My 2021 HE is the same way. I thought there was something wrong with it because it will downshift and rev the engine north of 3000 rpm, but I’ve seen a lot of people mention it’s common. My 2020 tundra is flawless

Same here on ours, it sucks! I hate how the tranny will sometimes down shift when slowing at lower speeds and rev high and hold it. What a horribly written transmission software.

After the 3rd unsuccessful dealer attempt and 2 more from my window guy who's the high end guy for more than a few dealers, I disconnected the rain sensing wiper system from hell.

No issues with shifting for hills. That includes pulling a 3-horse trailer with a big horse...right around 3500 lbs. total. Downshifts really save the brakes...lots of mountains around.

I just tried adaptive cruise control today in freeway traffic today and it was fantastic.

It was a stop and go traffic and the adaptive cruise completely stopped the car. Pressing the accelerator restarted adaptive cruise. It did a good job staying at a reasonable distance from the car in front and kept up with moving traffic.

I haven’t had a car with this much tech before so pretty impressed, the fact that it’s a LC always brings a smile to my face!

2021 LX.

I was able to go to a complete stop in traffic with adaptive cruise. It shows a warning message to tap the accelerator when cruise should resume. And even in stopped traffic we were able to start adaptive cruise.

The LC and the LX have different radar CC tech. For instance the LX has all speed radar cruise while the LC is limited to 29mph+. I think that means the tech is more advanced in the LX.

Bet the tech is the same and it’s 1 line of code that prevents all-speed use on the Cruiser.

Doesn't the LX have an electronic parking brake that facilitates coming to a complete stop?

Yes the LX has an electric Parking Brake. I never had our 2019 LX570 bring us to a complete stop but it did slow me down to nearly 10mph once in city traffic when an idiot pulled out in front of me from a side street.

I think it’s more than just a line of code. It’s likely a newer generation radar sensor, driver support computer, and maybe more.

This may allow the LX to have a much smoother radar cruise operation compared to the LC.

I’m sure Acrad would know..
