So I've been lurking for a few weeks, shopping for a 70 series. I'll spare the details but I bought this 1991 hzj77 from a dealer in Washington. He had it for a year and did a ton of work to it.
All these items were added within the last year:
Timing belt
Tensioner
Pulley
Holset Turbo
Manifold
Catchcan
Air filter
Straight pipe exhasut
Heavy duty Clutch
Pressure plate
Throw out bearing
Pilot bearing
Steering rod ends
Knuckle and trunion bearings felts
Front rotors and pads
Dobinsons 2.5" Leaf springs and shocks
Manual hub conversion

35" kanati Mud hogs
Front runner rack
Rear cook table
Sony double din
Auber EGT gauge
Has 296k kms.
I negotiated him down to $27k out the door. He kept the awning.

It seemed a good price, rust free other than a small dot under the driver door.
Interior is.... OK? For a 30 year old truck. Needs some tlc all over. Has a small oil leak at either the rear main or valve cover running down the back of the block.
It seemed like it was a good deal based on other rigs I've looked at. Been driving from Seattle to Denver for 2 days now and runs like a champ.

I guess I was just looking for a baseline from the community since I've never bought or owned a 70 series, the values seem to be all over the place, knowing I overpaid would make me a little more careful moving forward getting parts and mods so I'm not even more underwater if I ever go to sell. That's all.

That’s about right for those cars these days - I was shopping a few years and talked to a few dealers that import in the PNW. You can expect about 30k from what I’ve seen.

I know the P.O. and he’s a skilled mechanic that took a lot of care for that vehicle. I’d imagine all things considered, you got a healthy vehicle. Which is kinda the best you can ask for with these niche RHD guys.

EGT can be measured either pre-turbo or post-turbo. 1250 pre-turbo is a good number to stay below.

Regarding price, you got a good deal. Don't beat yourself up about it either way. These cars are not investments with an expected ROI (although the ROI of classic cars is fairly decent as investments go). Rather, they should be viewed as a means of transportation and a really fun hobby. Just enjoy the ride and put money into it as you see fit.

I own an HZJ77 myself. It's been a blast to own, and I never expect to sell it.

PS that's a beautiful truck. It's going to turn a ton of heads in Colorado.

The turbo is the biggest concern I guess, never had a car that had more power on tap, but wasn't able to give it the beans cause of temps. It drives like a champ though, 1300 miles and no issues.
Where are you located? Is yours turbo?

Yes, I installed a GTurbo greenwheel. I added a front mount intercooler and a 3" exhaust, which really brings down the EGT's. It's a blast to drive now.

No, I did it all at once. Turbo, intercooler, exhaust. I did the turbo for the performance. I did the intercooler and exhaust for the longevity.

The intercooler was, by far, the hardest part. Not because the work was difficult or complex. Rather, because many of the A/C lines shredded upon removal, and they had the be custom manufactured. Fun project but it grew in scope midway through.

PDI from Australia makes a front mount intercooler kit with AC condenser relocation kit. You may need to switch to a plastic grill and matching marker/blinker assemblies to fit a grill. They offer two thickness, I would go with the thinner one.
As far as RGT’s go you need to know if the probe is pre-turbo or after turbo, it makes a big difference

Some nice upgrades/general maintenance performed by the PO, but at those Kms on the engine I would put an intercooler (PDI is a good choice) at the top of the priority list. Cost wise, it's not much, and it could likely save your engine. As others have said, keep the EGTs below 1250 (pre-turbo) and get an after market coolant temp gauge too.

Over all it looks like you got a nice cruiser, and the price you paid is in the ball park of what they go for these days. Driving it the distance you have will tell you a lot about the condition it's in and will give you a good feel for it.

The Holset turbo is something I'm thinking of switching too. I currently have a CT26 coupled to a 1Hz.

Luckily, you are in CO and there seems to be quite a few resources in the area that are familiar with 70 series and the 1Hz.

Here's a link to the PDI intercooler details if you decide to install it. I didn't see if yours is manual or automatic. If it's automatic (like mine), the passenger side needs some modifications to make everything fit.

The awning was included per our verbal agreement, until I showed up and he had removed it. Intercooler is definitely on the top of the list, which is weird since "it never leaked a drop of oil" . Looks like either the "brand new rear main seal" is leaking. Or something at the too rear of the engine. Valve cover that's running down the bellhousing? Weird.
Yes intercooler for sure, and mine is a manual.
Stupid stupid question. No worries on the intercooler blocking the radiator? I assume the air just goes through both, right?
