I'm looking for any help replacing my Neutral Safety Switch. I say this because, currently, the truck only starts in neutral. I didn't learn this until I had also replaced the battery and starter, but that's alright in hindsight because they needed to be done.

I can't get the switch past the shift bolt that the shift lever is fixed to. This bolt needs to be replaced as well because it's twisted, rusted and it sheared off with its nut. FSM basically says after removing the top switch bolt "remove neutral safety switch." Thanks, vague as usual. Anyone know what I'm up against here?

Skunked. Huh. Well, pics always help. . .

Any ideas how to remove the whole switch and the broken bolt. And yeah, I've pulled on them both.

I'd be no help here, I chucked mine and threw in a R150..check the FSM's, or I can try to check them when I am home later this week.

No FSM is no help cause it gives no direction on how to remove. Looks like that bolt pulls out of the switch before anything. But that's the thing. Who can tell me to yank the s*** of that lever bolt?

im not a yota auto trans god. but it has been my experince that those switches come off as one unit after removing the nut, on the stud, and the hold downm or adjustment bolt.

why aint yours coming off? i dont know. i sure as hell wouldnt try removing the stud any farther, cause that goes into the valve body.

i got one of these things sitting outside my shop collecting rain. i will inspect it and report back

Not on a Yota, but I've seen the switch stick onto the shaft - it takes a bit of wiggling and patience to remove it sometimes

*2ndGenToyotaFan thanks for finding a pic, I couldn't post from work..Not just that but look at the nut all cracked apart. Just pull the two bolts and replace the entire deal, part store or dealership should also have the arm piece assembly, or like said, by then just spray the crap out of it and remove the steel bit.

i just pulled one off a scrap trans. its easy.
remove:
12mm head bolt on body
12mm nut on shaft, with washer
linkage
21mm? (used my pliers) nut
keeper washer
rubber seal
use large screw driver to remove

Thanks wristy et all. It took way longer than it should have. I finally had to just jerk the thing off with a screwdriver massacring the back of it in the process. The last inch was brutal. Now what about that stud? Please don't tell me I have to crack into the valve body.

If it were mine i would go old school and just connect the wires together-eliminating the switch- They didn't have them in the 60's or before - Just plastic junk to give you problems.

it's an auto, you can't eliminate the switch!
the switch is NOT a "neutral switch", it's the range sensor, or "inhibitor switch" as toyota likes to call it
the same switch allows the ECU to know what position your shifter is in... D, 2, L, etc
