I am helping someone looking for a lockable rear storage container that will take up the rear floorboard (removing the rear seat) for an FJ40 that will not go above the height of the rear fenderwells. He also wants it long enough to be able to put a rifle in it (diagonally?) along with other items.

Any suggestions from the braintrust? Thanks in advance...

Not lockable but i'm sure you could figure something out, super duty and weighs next to nothing.

I was going to suggest seeing mtkreitz about that - it's Mikey - he can build anything !!!!!

why not a rifle case ?

I am planning to mount one (or similar box) across or between my fender wells

Agree^^^
Something removable...All my junk would fit in the 42" between the gates and the seats. Cool idea, maybe with a HD drawer..

Just need a custom fab guy.:hmm:

Moved to Flagstaff back in the early seventies. Back then it was common to see a rifle rack in a pickup. I even installed one in my FJ40. Times have changed. Today not a good idea to install anything that advertises you might have a gun inside. One except is carrying a soft rifle case you can throw over a seat when you leave your vehicle in the middle of nowhere. Easy to tell the gun isn't inside but also makes anyone who might thinking about breaking in the owner of the vehicle may very well be armed. Unless you leave a visible note no one has a idea of your gone for days or be there in two minutes. To do this you don't even need to own a gun.

Hola Murf,
I've had good luck with Hardigg Storm/Pelican cases without the foam in them.

A pair of 2700 are a good fit in the back of a 40...albeit a bit tall and too small for a long gun unless we're talking taken down AR.

You could fit two 2700s and one short rifle case, hmm...very nice.

Mac's will do custom length tie downs...

Mac's VersaTie track kits, aluminum track, E track, and deck hardware

This is the best source I've found.

Pelican Cases | Storm Cases iM2700 | Nalpak

Endless options.

Cheers,
John

Back when us kids would have an 870 in the rack while the truck was parked in the high school parking lot. Because we were off to chase some dove or quail after classes. Those days are so gone...

If things were like they are today just having a gun on school property would land you in hot water. Bigger deal then worrying about someone stealing it.
