Good info. JA - if they are the rims from Summit the gray is primer so just paint no priming needed.

Rocking summit 16x7 wheels with Nankang 235's and love it.

That's what the beast should look like with new shoes. Nice rig.

Finally got the tires. Wheels took two days to show up, tires took a month...not sure I'll ever buy from 4wp again.

Tires are a bit small compared to the previous old 37" MTRs , but the 315's are more reasonably priced and balance better, truck still looks good. Tire on the driver's side rubs the tie-rod, but that's not entirely due to this tire/wheel combo, my steering arms have been customized. I'll have to throw the 1/4" spacer back on the front. Put them on at sunset last night. Need to get a better photo.

No more death wobble at 45 mph which is a bonus.

And a test fit on the Troopy:

with no lift, I'd be missing my front mud flaps the first time I turned a corner...

Oh, and I bomb-canned them with 'Toyota Equipment Gray' purchased on Amazon.

Looks like Idaho has a new looking rig
Nice

Revisiting this thread....

16x7 Wheel Vintique

Can anyone confirm if the back side of the lug nut holes come in contact with the hub? The reason I ask is that all of them have a pretty sharp lip from when the hole was machined into the wheel. I could counter-bore them, but I'm not sure this section even makes contact given the raised lip around the bolt circle on the wheel.

I'm not near the cruiser at the moment otherwise I'd pull a wheel and inspect. Thanks in advance!

Might I ask were you got the rims, Summit?
I do not think you would have a problem with the raised lip. If you take a straight edge and lay it across the top you will see that the lugs sit lower in the ridge. They do look pretty sharp. One can use a small hand grinder or file and take off the lip on both the lug holes and a hair off the inner hub hole.
I will say, my wheels did not have that on them when I revived them. Just looks like a QC issue from the factory Call the dealer and explain what you have if you feel uncertain.
Cheers

love2fly - Thanks for the prompt reply. these are indeed from Summit.

Your filing idea is sound, however my main questions is if this surface even makes contact? Your initial review has me thinking that there is a small gap when mounted and where the raised edge is won't even be making metal to metal contact. I could be wrong though.

I love the look of the stock 5.5" wheels but think that they are a tad too small for 235s or 255s. Also, since I am already running a set of 16x7 wheels w/235s, I'd like wheels a bit narrower. So, I took the 16" Toyota split rim centers out and had them welded onto 16x6.5" wide barrels. I am liking them so far!

Just read through 6yrs. of posts on this thread... soooo helpful! From everything I gather I think this will work, but nobody mentioned the fj55, so I wanted to ask before purchasing... Will the 16x7 Summits work on a stock 71 fj55 with 235/85/16? Best Guesses? I just installed wilwood disc brakes all the way around. Could I push it to a 255/85/16, or need a lift for that?
Also, i guess i dont have a need for my original 15x5.5 with caps... they are in good shape, just dont fit with the discs now.
Thanks @love2fly

I'm getting ready to replace the Wheels/Tires on my 71 FJ40.

My plan is:
-Stockton Rims Series 20 16x7 with a 3.5" backspacing
-235x85xR16 tires (haven't settled on a brand yet)

I think this ought to do it, but I was a little fuzzy still on whether this backspacing is going to work with the wider rims. I think Stockton will go a little more than that if I want, like 3 5/8" or so, and can certainly go lower.

Can anyone confirm that the Stockton's are going to be good on a FJ40 this size?

Thanks

@softdrinkviking Doesn't Stockton have to reverse the center to make it work? I had seen a few pictures and thought they looked strange that way.

I went with the wheel vintques 12 series smooth, with the same wheel/tire size combo and thought they turned out great. The are heavy as heck though.

I think it's the rim part that gets reversed, not the centers. they wouldn't mate flat otherwise. I guess it might look somewhat different?
IAC, I think that can do then regularly up to 3.5".

You got them with 3.5" backspacing? The others in this thread I believe went with 4".

My general concern is that my truck has drum brakes, so would have been 4" backspacing. I'm worried that the tires wil hit the wheel well on the outside in the rear. I have stock wheel wells.

How do you like the Willwood conversion on your 55? Looking at the same disc conversion and 16x7 smoothies and 255/85's for my 1970 55.

I love the steel wheel look and I’m thinking about going with a 35”x 12.5” BFG KM3 on my 72 FJ40.
Does anybody have any pictures of them mounted on a Smoothie wheel? 15“or 16”is fine.
Any help would be great.

I would go with 16" for better tire options. I have BFG 235/85/16 and they are a perfect fit for the engine and body. I almost got the 255/85s but they want a premium for them. Do you have your rear wheel wells cut out? If you don't, 35x12.5s will rub or damage the body.

Take a look at post 164 above. Those are 315\75\16s on 16x8 smoothie s close to a 35.
The 45 is SOA though, no rubbing.

Here is what I’m currently running. 33”x10.5 MT
I have a 4” TPI lift with extended shackles in the rear. I had the 35” Mud Kings on there back in the 90” without the extended shackles and only rubbed a little In the back.

Looks great! That is definitely not a stock tub so if you have the clearance then go for it. I am considering adding my 285s from my truck onto the FJ40 when it is time for new tires.

Thank you,
Yes that tub is a custom 1/4”. My original tub was rusting away with the New England winters when it was my daily driver. Truck is a tank but I love driving it.
I just got to make up my mind on what do get for wheels. I reached out to Stockton last Friday.
$285.00 per wheel plus powder coating and shipping costs make it difficult to go that route. Just got to keep searching for ideas. I could always get the smoothies then weld some clips on them for the hubcaps. Has anyone ever had success with that?
