I am doing a 55 body on a 80 frame so I am actually looking for narrow wheels so it doesn't look too retarded... I ran 60 series axles on the last pig and they looked and worked great, but ideally (at least in the front) I'd like maybe .5" to an inch wider than the 60 series, but I am willing to stay near 60 series with too... 80 series axles seem to be about 4" wider overall than 60 series axles as far as I can tell. So I would like to come in by about 2" to 3" to even 4" narrower than stock. I am also hoping to run some type of 35 x 12.5 or a 315 of some sort, possibly as small as a 34" tire at the smallest.. But I do not mind going slightly narrower like a 11.5" wide or something like that. I also do not mind going to a 16" or even 17" rim...

I have not done a lot of messing around with 80 series axles and/or rims so I have little real world experience with what rims actually work...

I am aware that there is a 17x7(??)) tacoma steel rim for spares that looks really good on 80s, very OEM FJ40 like, which appeals to me. I searched and I can't find the thread anywhere?

Then there are 16" rims, looks like they go in about 2" narrower which I like, from this thread:

Then here is a 17 x 7.5" x 5.5" backspacing, think this is too much backspacing to fit on the 80 series axle?? I am also sorried about the 7.5" width rim, I know it would fit but probably not work as well as a 8" wide... But these would work great...

Then here is a cheap Summit Racing option, about $50, in a 16" version, genuine 8" wide by 5" backspacing...

Then there are these 17" Daytona wheels, 8" wide with 5" backspacing:

Any comments or ideas? I really like the steel wheel look and price of course...
Thanks, Andre

I have been looking and looking for the thread that showed the 17" spare tacoma wheels that bjowett is mentioning in the thread you are discussing. I like the Tacoma rims you are talking about but ideally I would like to find photos again of the retro tacoma spare wheel they are talking about. Also, the best price I can find is about $120 each which is pretty expensive for a steel wheel. I have emailed cruiserdan though...

If you PM bjowett he may still have the pix? Check the used market, they are the spare wheels for Tundra's and Sequoia's, probably pick them up cheap from bone yards or ebay?

Base model tundra's come with these wheels in 16x7 on all four corners, with plastic covers. You may also want to make a few calls to local wheel shops. I picked up 5 of these wheels from a local bling shop a while back for $75.

i think the 16" spare rims are also the style you want but 16x7 is too skinny for 315s!! it is not easy to find'em because most steel rims on the market are the regular take offs and those rims are not the same. not too many people selling a set of the spares i'm guessing.

If you can figure out how to switch to a 5 bolt 100 series hub, crusher at luxuryimports.ca has a source for brand new split rim 16" mining truck take off wheels with tires that have the look you want and are cheap but maybe too skinny?

also, don't know if this interests you. found it while looking for crusher's thread

back to top.. Here are some photos of Bjowett's setup. Which is great but cheapest I can find them is about $100 each shipped. Rumor has it the FJ Cruiser rims and Sequia rims are very similar.. But are they the same backspacing and everything? I do know they are 17 x 7.5 but not sure of the back spacing. Also I did some measuring. I do not need 17" rims. 16" with 5" of backspacing will work too. Even though I'd prefer 8" wide rims, the 7.5" bring the track width in an inch on each side which is perfect for me.. so a 16 x 7.5 x 5.0 backspacing would be perfect too. I have found some 5.0 backspaced 16" rims on Summitracing.com that look good but are 8" wide so only 1" overall narrower...

sorry photos of Bjowett's setup:
