If anyone can provide pictures with some measurements on the positioning of the windshield wiper arms and motor on the top of the windshield frame applicable for a 9/73 production date FJ40, it would be appreciated.

Specifically, where are the mounting holes (ex. measurement in from side edges of windshield frame and down from top edge, also size of holes).

I need to cut new holes into an aluminum frame windshield and don't have the original steel one to look at for a template.

TIA.

Here you go, HTH

Just to explain....the first pic is to show where I measured from:doh:

Here are the vertical measurements....First pic is driver's side...

Fantastic!

Thanks so much!!!

I went to measure out the holes on my windshield frame today and my interpretation of your measurements didn't seem to come out right...hope you can help me through this senior moment I'm having :o

The wiper arm bolts are approximately 20" apart and once I have the position for one it should automatically enable me to get the right one for the other. So if you could just indicate what the measurement is for the leftmost wiper arm bolt (measuring from left to right on the driver's side).

Thanks,

Looks like 10 or so inches from the left side, drivers side.

You have it laid out correct though. Anywhere in that ballpark should work. The wipers sweep down and then back to the top. The biggest limiter is the distance from top to bottom of the glass in terms of wiper length. At rest the wipers are up, and there is not much problem with the passenger side hitting anthing at rest. It is only as they sweep down that they run the risk of hitting the bottom of the frame if mounted incorrectly. Also the drivers pushes all the way to the left edge of the glass. So this movement becomes critical also.

Also, the two shafts are level across there, so level with the glass opening. A better measurement woud be from the bottom of the frame edge to the hole, rather than from the curved top edge.

Cool, I appreciate all the information. Do you have that measurement from the bottom of the frame edge to the bolt hole -- might as well try to use that if you think that is a good indicator of how far up the wipers should be.

Thanks,

Don't have it handy, I think you can get it from the photos posted, close enough. Also remember that the hardtop front peice comes down near the shafts and is notched to clear them. With my Ehsan soft top, the top touches on the drivers side arm, so even stock placement is pretty tight to the other components around it. You should be able to get them close enough.

Looking at the photos Degnol posted, I would say 3/4" is about right. The motor and stuff will hang off funny, so don't think that those parts sit flush or lineup with the frame, as they don't.

How are you going to attach the attaching bolts for the motor and second gear box??? They are threaded holes stock. Rear view mirror also mounts to the top of the frame via two or so threaded holes as I recall. The base portion of it rides under the cable attaching the two wiper drives. It sits dead center if I'm remembering correctly, so account for it.

Also the wiring for the wiper comes through the lower portion of the frame, from the dash, then back out of the frame and is attached to the frame with several clamps along the inside edge with small phillips headed screws.

So when you say 3/4" is just about right, you mean 3/4" from the top edge of the frame down to the top edge of the hole for the wiper arm?

I was planning on drilling and tapping holes for mounting the actual motor to the frame. Hadn't given thought to the mirror yet, but I should also be able to drill/tap that given your description of its placement.

I will have to drill out a hole I guess for where the harness comes out and find some type of fastener to secure the harness wire to the frame.

If anyone has pics of how/where the harness comes out and is secured to the frame that would help.

Thanks for the help.

No, carefully looking at the tape measure in the pictures I'm getting 3/4 from the inside surface of the frame to the center of the hole. But interpret the tape how you want, you indicated you wanted measurements from the top edge of the frame to the hole. But if you look at each photo especially the first one with the vertical measurements, it appears to be approximatley 3/4" from the inside surface to CL to me, perhaps just a tad less. They will look better set at the same measurment from one surface rather than trying to guess the distance from the top, especailly since your aluminum frame does not appear to have the exact same curve as a factory frame on the top.

The holes for the wiper shafts are 12mm and they are 19 3/4" center-to-center

Got it, thanks guys!
