Hello everyone.

I am gearing myself to the purchase of a troopy. However one thing i cannot decide on which engine to get, the four options availabe to me are the 1GD 4cyl turbo diesel automatic, 1GR v6 petrol automatic/manual, 1VD v8 turbo diesel manual, 1HZ i6 diesel manual. I want to get some opinions with people that have experience with these engines. below i compile some pros and cons for my use, which is long distance overlanding.

1GD
Pros
- Low fuel usage, i drove a hilux, LC150 and LC250 with this engine and fuel economy is great.
- Automatic gearbox will be easier to drive and more comfortable
- Looking online stock this engine appears to outperform the v8

Cons
- Whilst driving over sand dunes i found that this engine sometimes lacked power
- Sound (im a dude i like nice sounding engines and this one isnt fantastic)

1GR
Pros
- Highest power output out of all the engines
- Automatic gearbox will be easier to drive and more comfortable

Cons
- Insane fuel usage, an accuaintance has a 79 2 door with this motor and his fuel consumption was very high especially offroad. He did have manual and quite heavy foot however i want 1200km range minimum and do not want to overload the car with tons of fuel
- Cost is higher with high fuel consumption
- Petrol is less available - at least during my travels in north Africa - then diesel.

1VD
Pros
-V8
- With a tune it has plenty of power

Cons
- It is very hard/impossible to find a new one

1HZ
Pros
- Probably the most reliable

Cons
- Its an absolute slug

If you had the choice which one would you pick?

Thank you in advance

Jan

If I had no issues with emissions in my country, would opt for the venerable 1HZ diesel...

PS. A friend of mine, Buschtaxi site member in Germany, sold his GRJ76 (bought new in Germany) and purchased a used HZJ78 Troopy: he never looked back...

For serious overlanding, nothing with an auto.

I would get an HZJ, then replace/rebuild the engine as a 1HD-T or -FT.

If the 1GD struggled in sand, the 1HZ will fare even worse.
