Hi Guys,

New around here but hopefully you can help me out. I am in the process of moving into the Ramona / Valley Centre area and will be staying with some friends there for the next few weeks to do some house hunting and have a good look around.

Anyway like all guys moving to the USA from a far away place like Australia the 1st thing I did was bought a 40 series cruiser and now I need to get it registered in CA.

It is around a 79 model so will need to be smogged I guess. Can anyone provide some info on the process and where to take it ?

Will I even be able to do it without a CA drivers License ? ( I have an Australian one :))

Any info would be great, I pick it up with a permit so I can drive it around but just need to work out what exactly I need to do.

Cheers and thanks in advance looking forward to meeting up with some cruiser guys

Brad

Hi Brad,

Congrats on the move. I hope you enjoy it over here.

As for your vehicle registration, the CA DMV has a lot of info on-line. Here is a link to their out-of-state license and registration info: Information For Persons New To California

In short, you will need to get the vehicle smog'ed and inspected, with proof of insurance. As for a place to smog it, check with your friends. I have found them all about the same and I have always looked for the most convenient location.

Also, I believe you will have to take the written exam for your CA license.

Cheers,
Dek

Hi Dek,

Thanks for the feedback I will check out the site.

Move should be good, looking forward to getting a bit less junk and doing a lot less work :)

Good luck with your move. Registering a vehicle is pretty painless. The toughest part will be getting it smogged.

Thanks guys I pick it up in a few hours so should be cool, just have to make the 1000km trip in an unseen 40 year old car I bought off the web, off some guy I have never met after making full payment to the guy in a country I don't live in where they drive on a different side of the road and don't even measure distance the right way

What could possibly go wrong ....:)

Its a Landcruiser after all

U guys still know about Croc Dundee, that is cool :)

Hopefully all will go fine, I will pack some duct tape, cable ties and a pocket knife. That is of course unless the TSA steal them from me as a national hazard.

Make it OK?

Make it OK?

Yep made it no probs at all. Apart from the fact that the 2F is an under powered POS engine and uses more fuel than I would have thought possible it did the 1000km trip with ease. Truck itself is in great nick and the seller was very honest and up front. It passed CA smog the day I got here without drama.

Having been driving it around though she won't be staying 2F powered for long ......

Get a AAA membership. Worth the towing alone if you have issues. I think it is $70/year. If you have a membership you can register your car with them and save the nightmare trip to the DMV. www.aaa.com redirect If your truck already passed smog then the hard part is over. Last time I registered an out of state cruiser with AAA the woman at the counter actually reduced my purchase price for me on my paperwork thus reducing the amount of tax I had to pay....don't think they will be doing that for you at the DMV. Welcome to CA!
