Sorry, one more question on this. At the moment there seems to be no automatic locking or unlocking at all. If say I were to enable Mode 1 and Mode 4... how could I then switch it back to having nothing automatic?
Reading the manual, it says for each mode "To cancel the function, do the above operation again" so will give it a go...
Well, I just tried to do it without success. Entered car, all doors closed, switched key to ON (not starting engine) with gear stick in Park, pressed driver door lock switch for 5 seconds then released, but nothing happened. Also tried it in Neutral, same thing. Also tried the same with the door switch rear position. Did it a bunch of times, even used a stopwatch. With none of them did I get a lock/unlock confirmation. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Unless this car doesnt have that function - its a Japanese import but from what I've read automatic door locking is mandatory there so that seems unlikely to be the issue. It does appear that someone fitted an aftermarket alarm system (not functional now, no remote), could that be the issue?
Hmmm... can't speak to whether or not the JDM model has that feature, but the alarm should tie into the locking system. If it was the VIP system I would say you would stand a better chance of an auto-lock feature remaining intact, but some of the aftermarket installers just snip wires they don't understand and put there stuff in.

This is how I got this to work. I began by placing the shifter in neutral FIRST, then proceeded to follow the instructions exactly as described by Topoguide in his post above. Placing the transmission in neutral as a first step allowed me to then “shift the selector lever INTO the ‘P’ position” as specified.
Confirm this worked on my ‘03 LX. Thanks for all who have provided the detail on the different modes and instructions. Mine was in mode 1 since I bought it, and just thought there was something wrong when it wouldn’t Auto Unlock the doors after putting it back in P like my old RX’s would. Just when through the process and changed it over to mode 4.
Anyone got this to work on a 2000 Series 100?
Yay! I got it to work: exactly 5 seconds, and got mode 4 selected.

There is a set of steps in the manual that will let you change this. When I put mine in park, the doors unlock.
