I took off the negative battery terminal to do the PHH yesterday. Now my radio won't work. I read the manual on how to put the code in there, but realized that I do not know the PO's code.

Now is there a default code on there? I'm thinking the PO didn't even bother to recode.

I just need the radio to work again so I can listen to some tunes.

Thanks again.

Waggoner5 is CORRECT, Sir!

Yes and no.

The dealer will know how to lock the radio up and then revive it but he SHOULD NOT provide the code. If he does he is in voilation of his dealer agreement.

So pretty much take it to the local Toyota Dealer and have them work on it?

I'm a little leary of taking it to the dealer. The last time I was there, I asked them to turn off a engine check light on my highlander. They turned it off and told me nothing was wrong, then a week later the check light came on again. I ended up taking it to a local mechanic who works on nothing but Japanese Cars.

Dan, how much should the dealer charge me for a problem like this?

I'm a little surprised that this hasn't been made public. It is afterall a 10 year old radio with little or no theft value.

Yeah, my local dealer told me to bring the truck in and they would remove the unit, get a code off the back and call Toyota for the default/master code.

cruiserdan, can he just go to the dealership and provide proof of ownership? Will that violate the agreement?

Seems overly cautious to me. What difference would it make if you are the guy with the name on the title and you want to reset your stereo?

On a side note, do all OEM stereos have a code? I have disconnected my battery several times which reset the radio presets and never needed a code. I have the OEM in-dash 3 disk changer if that makes a difference?

I'm a little surprised at this comment too. The dealer won't provide the code even if I show them the pink slip??

I was also wondering if the OEM stereos came with a default code out of the factory? Like cell phones coming with "1111" default code.

It is not supposed to be public Rick. It doesn't matter how old the radio is. The master code is not to be released.

I know you very well and I would not release a master code to you. It is a violation of the dealer agreement. I do not think that you would do anything inappropriate with the code but that is beside the point.

The dealer will unlock the radio for you but he will be in violation of the dealer agreement if he gives you the master code.

What the hell good is an anti-theft radio if every swinging dick has the code to unlock it?

Helllooooo?

The dealer will be happy to unlock the radio for you but he should not surrender the code.

As delivered, anti-theft radios do not have a code input. The code is chosen and input by the owner. If the radio does not have a code input it behaves like a normal readio when the power is interrupted.

The radio does not need to be removed and in fact it should be installed when it it is unlocked.

Ahhhhh, I see, so there is a MASTER code, I was thinking there was an individual code for each unit. I know this to be true true of Saab Clarion built "OEM" units and it was a pain in the arse! Thanks for the clarification C-Dan.

Each model of anti-theft radio has a master code that pertains to that model only. It used to be that if a chassis was locked up it had to be removed and sent into the repair station to be un-locked (for a fairly stout fee, I might add) but later on it was decided to release the codes to dealers, with the understanding that the codes not be divulged.

In Australia 9 times out of 10 the code is the last 4 or 6 , cant recall , vin numbers.Toyota will burn you big time to reset a 2 bob radio.
