Having some difficulties deciphering the Toyota wiring, what colors are for what on my 1991 LJ78 Prado. There's three plug harnesses but the oem stereo only used one and it has the tape and CD set-up.

I think I might be retarded, everytime I use my multimeter it blows the fuses for the dome lights, I've been using my key ignition as a ground as well as the seat bolt.

I believe I found ground, constant, and ignition power but i can't get the deck to power up, it just cycles the CD eject mechanism even after reseting the deck.

Any help would be appreciated

LOL!!
been there done that...
there is an amp in the back LH panel, you need to bypass the amp... the amp cuts out the power going to the speakers...

two ways to do this, one: rewire to bypass manually (been there done that.
OR
do it the easy way, buy the bypass wire from Toyota for $20 ...
BTDT...

cheers

So the amp is near where the jack is kept, okay but I still haven't even hooked up the speakers to the new decks wiring, also I'm not totally sure if I have the proper ground, constant, ignition power.

Wayne, you don't happen to remember what colors are for what wires.

I'm really pulling my hair out over this.

Thanks for the help

if you go to the stereo shop they will sell you the proper adapter that is a plug and play to the other 2 plugs.
it will be wired properly but you won't hear anything till you bypass the amp. then all is well.

I keep blowing the Dome fuse in my JDM 80 series too.. install the stereo.. it fires up for a few secs, then blows... the last one I put in just blew right away after putting it in.. In Lost on this one...Crushers (Wayne) is mine the same thing too... do I need to bypass an amp... I remember taking the rear panels off before and not seeing any amps... sorry to hijack the thread, but I figure it's the same problem...

if the origianl radio was hooked to just one long thin plug then you have an amp. if it is the other thicker plugs then you have front and rear speakers and if it is jut the larger thicker plug then you have just front speakers.
the amp controls all speakers

actually i was chatting with you about the 74 / 73 /77 series trucks. i have had no problem installing the stereos in the 81 series rigs...

the only way i could help you is if i saw the rig in person...

crushers check your PM's thanks,

Don't know if this will help , but there are adapters pre-made to simplify stereo hook up .. Just about plug and play.. All you need to know about your truck harness is which set of plugs are connected to the existing factory stereo..
Then you just purchase the nessesary prewired adapter plug it in to your harnes and into the new stereo and you are good to go..I've seen them at Canadian Tire and Walmart & auto stereo stores..
Used one in my truck.. Saved cutting the factory harness all to h*ll..

when the factory amp is incorporated then you need to eliminate it...

there is nothing to tear apart, remove the side panel left rear, unplug the amp, plug in the bypass wire and you are done...
super easy...
seriously, if you have the bypass wire it takes about 5 minutes total...

i have 5 on order BUT they are not here yet. i want to makes sure it is the right part number first before i post it...
