I hope you folks can help me. I own a 1986 FJ60 and I’m in Colorado. It’s old enough to register as a Classic here, but I cannot for the life of me figure what the process is.

Do I have to take it to a smog station for a visual?

If any of you have done this, specifically in Colorado, I’d really appreciate your help.

I did this on my 84'

very easy. Went to my local county clerk and recorder's office, where the DMV section is for registering vehicles. I requested a classic registration, given that my vehicle qualified for it. The process was no different than a normal registration except for asking specifically for the classic plates and registration. They'll ask to see proof of insurance and ask for payment. Boom- new plates, registration and stickers good to go for 5 years.

If you want to be extra prepared, google Colorado classic vehicle registration and print out a copy of the rules, take that in with you in case you get any blank stares or pushback.

you might even be able to do the entire thing online now, not sure.
Hope that helps!

Good luck

Funny I was just looking into this in WA. My 1990 is eligible this year for collector plates.

$60 lifetime fee vs ~$90/yr for annual registration and transit taxes, really no restrictions if not a daily driver, & only a rear plate required.
"A collector vehicle registered under this section may only be used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and occasional pleasure driving. "

I drive it occasionally and when I do, it's a pleasure. Often it's to meet up with other LC owner "clubs". So there you go.

Not sure if you’re in smog check county or not, and I’m assuming Routt isn’t a smog county, but, if you’re in the smog counties, you’ll have to pass every 5 years with the classic tags. I had to pass on my ‘84 Tercel before I was able to get my classic tag.

Amen to that!
