So i took my fj40 wheeling on sunday, and everything went fine. I did try to pull a 2007 heep out of some sloppy mud, but he was so far dug in i couldn't. When I was trying to pull him out something starting smoking in the cab, i could tell it was coming from under the hood though? The people I was with was thinking it was the clutch. The smoke went away though and no more problems until today.

I started it up and was gonna drive it around to make sure it was running alright still, good thing I did.

It idles 100% normal, but when I switch gears and start releasing the clutch and begin accelerating again it surges. (It acts like one would when someone doesnt know how to drive stick yet.) So i press the clutch back in to keep it running. Even when i wouldn't put the clutch back in and press the gas again it would sputter out and die. It seemed like I could usually get it to fowl up like this when I started from being stopped to 1st gear.

Think its the clutch or what?

Yep, in fact put in a heavier duty clutch so that you don't have to keep donating as many clutches to guys who are stuck in the mud.
