I need some help installing this awesome tankless water heater I got from a fellow UC'r end of last year. A neighbor was helping me but it looks like he ran out of free time. :bang:

If anyone is around the Greenville / Travelers Rest area and could spare a day I would be very appreciative. Our tank water heater has sprung a leak and I think its days are numbered. The :princess: is not happy. I'll be happy to throw some , food, and a few bucks your way.

Steve, I got a friend who is a plumber and he told me to be reeeeeal careful with those things, if not installed properly they can leak and cause CO2 poisoning so don't take the forever nap with cheap UC help

That would be on the indoor units. I believe he is mounting it on the outside of the house. Who cares about CO2 emmisions then.:hillbilly:

Yup - this unit is an external unit. I already mounted it on the side of the house and punched out a brick to allow access from lines from my crawlspace. I hit a snag when my neighbor (who has installed several of these) ran out of time to help and I don't have any lines run and my current tank water heater is on its last leg.

Any help would be very appreciated.

There is a federal rebate on these now, however it kind of sucks. If you have other tax credits like childcare etc. and they are higher than the energy credit then you get zip. I wouldn't have received anything under the federal energy rebate because I have a $3500 childcare deduction and the energy deduction would only be about $800, so I wouldn't get both. I had to do some digging to find that out before I bought one. However this SC rebate along with the $300 rebate I get from SCE&G for converting electric to gas will make this almost a free switch for me now.

ProINV you have PM.:)

you running copper, pvc or what?

I am not licensed, but have done a TON of plumbing,, heck I did my entire restaurant and a few of my own houses,, the farm..

being 6'4" is the worst thing about it....

not sure what your codes are, go look at your neighbors house see if you need an expansion tank, make sure you plumb some disconnects and valves on the hot and cold sides of the unit in logical places so you can remove the unit without having to take out more brick...or for any unseen reason

cold goes in one side
hot comes out the other

gas line in??, put a disconnect on that too, and a valve before the disconnect so if you have to return it, your gas bill aint too high! and a T at the unit,, with a "catch" pipe, is is incase some scale comes loose inside the pipe, they will fall down before getting stuck in your venturi, or what ever it is called

does it require electric too?

When are you installing it?

Whenever I can get someone over who knows what they are doing and won't charge me an arm and a leg...

Running PVC water lines under the house - natural gas - gas line and water lines are not to the unit but they are under the house and close. I don't have to have someone who is licensed to help, just someone who knows what they are doing.

I try to put up the white flag when I'm in over my head and I've thrown it up on this one - just like last winter when my furnace went out. Ended up it was just the element but I had never fooled with one before and I didn't want to burn the house down or CO poison anyone.

I'm a VERY visual learner. Once someone shows me how to do something I can usually repeat it - but just never done a hot water heater.

I thought I just read the government is giving $1500 credit for taxes this year on them?

It's 30% of the installed cost up to $1500. So unless you got a receipt for a $5000 water heater installed you won't get the maximum. Mine cost about $1200 so only $360 for me. When I looked at the IRS form you fill out, it has a schedule that includes other itemized deductions that you would normally take if you don't take the standard deduction. If the other items are higher than the energy credit you can't get it. It would take someone replacing a lot of stuff to make it substantial.

The state rebate however is a great deal. It is automatic and is more than what I would get from the federal. $400 regardless of what you paid. Plus SCE&G will give $300 for switching from electric to gas.
