Gang,

I am looking for a trailer to haul behind my FZJ80. I have been hunting for a M416 since they seem to haul a bunch and have the suspension to handle going off road if you need to. But they are hard to find and require a frame off resto. I am not up for that work right now (doing a lift and such to my rig), so I was wondering if someone could help point me to a good sturdy trailer that could be taken off road. Nothing crazy on the off road, just more bumps and such than the typical trailiers I see can take. Doesn't have to be new, used is fine. I just don't want to have to completely restore it.

Any thoughts, ideas, or ones you know are for sale would be greatly appreciated!!!

I got a regular utility trailer and then flipped the axle around. Ended up with huge ground clearance, something like well over 15" or under the axle. Great for offroad.

That sounds intriguing. Got any pictures?? Where did you get your utility trailer? What size?

At this point I am just trying to get different ideas so I can figure out what to do.

This is a 1967 M416 trailer w/ pop up tent and it performed flawless on brutal trails at all speed. Like you said, it does required some restoration work to removed rust but I also modified it to my spec such as adding tailgate and beefed up the wheel fender. So it will last for many years to come.

Cheers,

Snook,

If anybody knows where I can find one in the Virginia area, please let me know. I'll go get it if need be.

I had a trailer built to my specs. It has just completed a 2800 mile, three week jaunt, and worked out well. It has a 4' X 6' bed, LC six lug wheels, 31" tires, 37 gallon water tank with electric pump and skid plate, on-board battery charger, tongue tool box, spare carrier, etc. Here it is - dusty and dirty, but I JUST returned from the trip.

NICE!!!

I need to find something or build something. And the later isn't likely to happen with all the projects I have on my list!!!

So I need to figure out where to find something, or find a "shell" to start from that will workk for now (small stuff, not off road) that I can mod to fit my needs.

I cut and pasted it here from Yahoo M416 forum

stresspooch - it would help if you state your location. there's a few up here and the depots were selling them last year. Just a few months ago I unloaded one I had for about 1 month - a white UN job. They are around, just keep the eyes open and let folks know where you are at.

That would help, wouldn't it?!?!??!

I am in Richmond Virginia.

I didn't know there was a Yahoo group. Guess I will have to go check that one out. Thanks!

I would like to find something I don't have to do a lot of work to, but I know that means I will definitely have to pay!

And if they are not in VA, I am not sure how something like that would get here. I could always make a trip of it and go get it, but for all that trouble, again I would like to not have to overhaul it.

I'll check out the yahoo group and see what's up.

Mike,

Based on photo, the pintle hook on your trailer is removable, height-adjustable AND swivelable?

Yes. The ring is mounted on a 2" tube, and the trailer has a receiver built into it. It can be removed or run in either the short position or a longer position. It adjusts up and down, and swivels 360 degrees.

Have you tried CS Coleman's in PA? I bought mine there back in 1996 when they had over 200 of them stacked four-high, I only paid $295 for mine and it came with a spare tire, plus I got to choose the cleanest looking one. Eight years later and a lot more money than my wife will ever know, I've pretty much completed my trailer project. Lengthened the frame for improving handling on the trail and mounting of a cooler rack, completely rewired it and relocated the lights, added a drop down tailgate and a lockable steel lid, mounted a folding tent, 3.5 gallon propane tank, 12-gallon freshwater tank with pump, heavy-duty tube fenders, sprung-over to match the Cruiser, custom axle to match the Cruiser track and bolt pattern, all SS-hardware and rhino-lined the interior.

Anyway, I digress. CS Coleman's is one of the biggest military surplus dealers in the country and they *always* have M416's. Last time I was up there a couple of years ago they only had a handful and they were on the expensive side, but that would be a nice road trip within range of Richmond.

A few years ago I bought and sold a batch of eight M416's that came out of Fort Huachuca, they were in awesome shape and a couple of them looked to have been used very lightly. If you contact surplus dealers in your area, they might have some leads, although most of the US Army's M416's have been surplused and are now in private hands.

I used to check Ebay religiously under "army trailer", "bantam trailer" "jeep trailer", "M416", "offroad trailer", "utility trailer" "military trailer", etc... Every once in a while I'd come across some bargains.

Another idea if you insist on military trailers is a British Sankey. Designed to be towed by a Land Rover, they are a little bigger than an M416, weigh about the same, and have better dimensions. The British Army just suplused the last batch of them and every Land Rover dealer in the UK is clogged with them. If you pick up a Land Rover magazine at Barnes & Nobles, you'll see the ads advertising these for 150+ pounds, and some were never even deployed. Obviously you have shipping to consider, but the Land Rover community in VA is pretty strong and they may have some leads, maybe one of the East Coast LR shops has them in stock or can get them for you.

If I had to do it all over again, I would do like Mike S and start from scratch. Cheaper, and you don't have to spend money correcting the M416's shortcomings.

This is a great looking trailer. Who built it for you? Where are you located? Do you have any more pictures you would like to share-- or better yet plans?

I have been looking for a trailer like that for a long time, and I have been thinking hard about having one built, but I have never been able to find a complete set of plans for one.

Again, that is a great looking trailer.

Hey Exiled--Fort Huachuca is in Arizona-- I am in arizona but I have not found any good M416 trailer sources here-- do you know of any?

Jared

Traveling down I-15 last month I saw a yard with 20+ of what looked M416 trailers. They had a lot of military trailer some of different design. It was around Salt lake UT. I tried to look and get the name but at 75+ all I was able to see was all the trailers. Anyone in this area know what the name of this place is?

Phil

North of Salt Lake? Smith and Edwards perhaps?

I have driven by there, but I have never stopped.

Very well could be........they have a lot of stuff

All I do remember is I saw going North and I said to myself I need to get the name of the place on the way back but on my return they were doing road construction in Salt Lake and I was detoured around the city and was not able to see it.

SJ:

I designed the trailer. It was built by Wayne Percival of Dixon, CA. He understands cruisers and has built a number of trailers for people. It has the following specs:

48" X 72" X 27" Box - steel
2" square tube frame
Slam latched tailgate (lockable) with pins for trail security
37 Gallon water tank between the frame rails with 1/8" Steel skid plate and 1-1/4" fill pipe
Very nicely designed (Wayne's) carriers for 4 5 gallon Blitz cans
Aluminum tip up top cover with 4 gas rams and cam lathes (lockable)
HD six lug axle and hubs
Toyota LC rims with 31 X 10.50 X15 radial tires
Delta loackable diamond plate aluminum tongue box with 2 105 AH marine batteries
1.6 GPM on demand water pump
3 stage battery charger with external receptacle
Tongue mount for full size spare with up to 33" tire
Demountable tongue jack with wheel
The frame, top and box are powder coated
Separate turn signal and running/brake lights
Trailer is 59-1/2" wide and hub centers are the same as an FJ60

This is more than the usual trailer than Wayne builds, but he is a great guy, charges a reasonable price for his work, and wants to build it the way the customer wants it.

I am planning on setting up the batteries with an isolator, and figuring out how to charge them from the truck alternator. I also think it would be good to mount a set of floodlights soemwhere for setting up camp after dark. I have not had time to apply Line-X to the interior - this is on the to do list.

Trailer performed really well on my three week road/camping trip.
