According to the tech, my ignitor is not working. I have a 9/1975 fj40 with 2F. 1976 vacuum advance dist, with the non-points electronic conversion kit from specter.
Looks like specter doesn't carry igniters anymore. What can I do, and where can i get one? are there any other alternatives?

So far, only lead is a $700 one the tech found! yikes!
thanks. gerry

Did you post in the "Parts Wanted" section?
Also a great time to go FJ60 "Big Cap"

Pictures or a better description of your ignitor would help.

I don't think that the original '76 points type ignitor is compatible with any electronic pickup distributor. You can test the original '76 ignitor by disconnecting the single ignitor wire to the distributor and momentarily grounding the wire. It should spark if the ignitor is OK. If you have the '76 ignotor, then you can just put points back in.

If you have two wires from the ignitor to the distributor, you can test it by momentarily connecting a AA battery to the two wires.

no ignitor needed.........

hey guys (esp pinhead! years of advice!!) appreciate the info. Currently i've come to realize that my ignorance knows no bounds.. (apparently). When i switched to the xr700 setup (crane cam mfg) from SOR, i didn't realize it included the ignitor.. I thought it was only a device to tell "when" to fire the spark. So when i called SOR to ask about ignitors, i mentioned i had their conversion kit.. and the guy says "Uh.. you don't need an ignitor from toyota for $348.. you HAVE an ignitor called the crane xr.. "

So i mention that the xr is wired into the coil, along with the original wiring the truck came from toyota with. He says "hmm. that doesn't sound right." I say "Hmm. It's been running that way for 8-10 years!" He says "hmm"

So the tech who looked at the truck said i somehow have the XR wired "in series" with the OEM ignitor... I guess all i did was take the nut off the - and + of the coil and add on the XR wires without disconnecting anything else.

So the short version is if I add in the OEM coil with internal resistor (part # 024-03a) from SOR, and use the XR setup, I can completely eliminate the entire ignitor/resistor apparatus.

I wish i was a little more savvy on electrical stuff. I can change parts out (what highly qualified shade tree grease monkey can't?) but sure as hell can't (apparently) figure out the electrics.

I have at least one, with coil. Part number is 89620-60010.

I think that's the one you need. PM if interested. I was running in the truck befor I switched to FJ60 ignition.

BTW-FJ60 ignition is a nice upgrade. If $700 is the price, you can do the complete conversion for less.
