Went to do my pull change.

Noticed black oil on my driveway where the rear end parks. Crawled under rear end. Think my rear differential fluid may be leaking. Thought something smelled funky. Not sure how long this has been happening and concerned about driving further.

It is Sunday and no shops are open. In Belgrade. Can anyone mechanical help?

pull the fill plug and see how low it is. if you reach your pinky finger in and feel oil level by the time your first knuckle reaches the housing, your fine. if not add oil until it runs out.

I don't have any oil to put in. Not sure I even have a wrench big enough to pull the plug? Assuming I can locate it.

I'm no mechanic.

Photos of the rear end.

the fill plug is directly above the "I" on the rear of the diff cover.
just a guess, it be 24mm? best to use a 6 point socket ground down to get full contact.
is there any movement on the pinion? up, down, sideways? block the wheels and relieve the tension in the drivetrain to check.

Sounds like I'm still plan A. Drive to a shop tomorrow and let them fix it.

Don't have the tools/know how necessary to do what you are asking.

Truck is bought, not built.

If by pinion you mean the drive shaft... no its not moving. Seems solid as a rock to me.

New photo. Covered in oil.

I maybe wouldn't take on the highway and let it heat up. short trips wont make it explode or anything. I hate to say it but jiffy lube could pop the plug and fill if necessary.

I'm just going to take it to Dark Horse tomorrow morning if they'll let me. They did my diff/gear install anyhow. Need to figure out why is leaking not just top it off.

how long ago did they do the install? should be warranty.

It's an ECGS diff. But they don't like to warranty on site. Prefer you send them the diff, which I can't do. This is my only vehicle.

They did pay Dark Horse to fix my air locker that didn't seal properly though.

We'll have to see what is actually causing the leak I guess. Really hoping it's as simple as a loose breather or something.

Dark Horse will definitely take care of it for you. They just did a full front diff rebuild on a club members 100 after a bad pinion bearing left a ping pong sized ball of schrapnel on the diff drain plug magnet from the original job. He paid $0. They will stand behind their work. PM me if you have any difficulty, and I'll get involved.

Took it to Dark Horse first thing yesterday. Diagnosed as pinion seal failure. They got me fixed! $130 total.
