Figure why not ask here. I desided to try my hand at coyote hunting. Pucked up a cheap reed call and went out a few days. 2 days i was solo one day i went with a friend who had a cheap speaker and just Bluetoothed it to his phone. I had a good time just being out but didnt see anything. It was still enjoyable.

My schedule is pretty tight in the next few months. Gophers are comming out and they need my attention. Then after that carp will clog the river. A new bow is in the mail to help with that. To much on my plate.

But if anyone is a seasoned coyote hunter that feels inclined to show me the ropes i would greatly appreciate it. Any thing from advice to letting me tag along on an outing would be great.

If it matters i am in Helena and have been mostly hitting the public land around canyon ferry.

picture from my last outing, no animals but it was a beautiful day out.

it appears you're set up on the east side of the lake, due to the amt of sheep the gov't trapper flies it pretty hard shooting coyotes. they don't get them all but keeps them thinned down. if you have a tree behind you it looks like a decent spot if not being on that ridge top you'll be outlined and busted . some days you can stand up and do jumping jacks and they'll still come running most of the time the movement of getting the rifle off those sticks will get you busted. keep at it and you'll figure it all out, there's nothing more fun than call in something that wants to eat you lol. nice shooter set up, ar's made a phenomenal change in gettin multiples, esp when the pups start getting out. having a dog with you will help more than anything, more movement they make the better. the coyote will be homed in on it and not you. Glad to see you getting out and about, yes the gophers are out and pretty thick in places

Thanks for all the info.

Yes, i had one of the big bushes you see in the picture behind me. I was taking a pretty casual approach to the whole thing. More interested in seeing if i could even call anything in.

Also, this spot is the west side of canyon ferry. But i did try some public land on the east side. On spot right along the lake and another square of state land further south surrounded by cattle/agriculture land.

Thats interesting to hear about the state thining the packs. Is there any particular areas you would be willing to suggest or share with me that you would recommend? Feel free to PM if you dont want to post it.

Also i think they will be having pups soon. Does this sound right? Is there any particular calls you would concentrate on using this time of year?
