Hi all,

I am new to this website, hoping to find people who have done extensive repairs and or know how on their cruisers, so here goes.

I recently purchased a 1985 Landcruiser with the 24v system (Canada), and after a good 2 months of driving it finally gave me a problem which I cannot figure out.

Vehicle background: AC system has been removed, radio + antenna removed, Wilson switch added for the glow plugs, has over 400,000 clicks.

So yesterday night I was starting the thing like I usually do (turn the key to just before turning over, holding the glow plug switch for 10 seconds) and it failed to start. So, I tried again and this time there was a puff of smoke coming from the passenger side battery. Turns out a bit of the terminal melted. Regardless I wanted to get moving so I got my buddy to jump start me with his 12v using just one battery on my cruiser, the one with a slight ly melted terminal. It finally did start after making a bit of diesel smoke in the engine bay.

Driving it was different though, unlike normal where the voltage slightly increases with the application of the gas pedal, it was acting sporadically as well the headlights were flickering a bit while the voltage wavered, also while this was going on was a clicking sound like a relay making contact off and on, just by the Wilson switch/Fuse box. The vehicle drove normally other than the voltage wavering, and eventually it stopped for the rest of the ride home.

Disconnected the wire from the slightly melted terminal and let it sit overnight. Connected it this morning after checking all the fuses (they were ok) and proceeded with my start procedure. The volt meter in the truck reads just under 24v, but applying the glow plug switch does not reduce the voltage reading like it usually does, however you can still here the click from a relay by the passenger side. When trying to turn it over, the terminal that melted a bit sparks but the starter motor does not engage at all, and thus the vehicle loses all power.

The warning light ( ! ) is on when i try to start it, which hasnt happened before, but I really am somewhat clueless about automotive electrics.

So, I was just hoping someone out there could possibly give some advice, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much!
:bang: <--- This is what I feel like right now

OK, So it turns out the battery terminal just needed a shim for now, but I think ill have to replace them regardless.

Now the thing turns over just fine, (btw forgot to mention is the 2H engine) but the glow plugs do not draw power even though the relay is activated with the use of the Wilson switch.

So im guessing there's a short or broken fusible link somewhere which is not completing the glow plug circuit.

Does this assumption make sense?

I've had issue with mine, I replaced the cable between both batteries, changed the GP fusible links and rewired my Wilson switch just to make sure everything was on par, as the system was altered by previous owner. Do you get any voltage at the GP busbar when the switch is enable?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. I just tested the glow plug busbar by putting one lead of the multimeter to the busbar and one to the exhaust manifold which is grounded. With the switch activated achieved 25 volts on the multimeter, but there was no change on the voltmeter inside the vehicle (when the GP system works normally i can see a 3-4 v maybe 5v drop in the electrical system as displayed there)

We are thinking maybe we have a couple of toast glow plugs. Sounds about right?

This guy had the exact same problem as us, and might have been the busbar itself, but if we replace the plugs then we will clean the bar anyways.

Ok, did you ever change the GP? If you remove them and are damage (broken) then you have issue, if not, you can check for continuity. Get your hand on a FSM (Factory Shop Manual) for the procedure (as I don't remember).

When I bought mine, the glow plugs where toast, I bought the recommended GP but they only worked once, since applying 24V on low voltage plug will just burn them (Ah the Learning curve!). I bought 24V plugs from 4WheelAuto, but I should I've got a 22 or 21V GP just to make sure they got hot enough and quickier.

Yeah, just pulled the glow plugs, there were 4 NGK 14v plugs and 2 14v plugs with an "ND" tag on them which are definitely newer, i dont know who manufactures them

The 4 NGK has some metal deposits on them (the tips) and were dirty as hell, actually all of them were. Im thinking that the deposits might have been making contact to the block thus shorting the system, and hence why there is no voltage drop shown on the trucks electrical system when activating the wilson switch. Also might explain why the relay was going haywire but thats just a wild guess??

This is the first time I've pulled the glow plugs, to answer your first question, never changed them.
